Getafe have now entered the chase to sign beleaguered Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood on loan on deadline day.
According to Football Insider, Getafe have sounded out a loan move for Mason Greenwood and are keen to tie up a deal for the beleaguered striker. Manchester United have no interest in keeping him. But loaning him out signals their U-turn about terminating his contract.
The Mason Greenwood saga has been a PR nightmare as far as Manchester United are concerned. Having seen reports about the club’s decision to re-integrate the striker, the backlash from fans resulted in the Red Devils reversing their stance.
Manchester United released a statement a week or so ago claiming they will not integrate Greenwood into the first team and that a contract termination on mutual terms was on the cards. Instead, the latter never happened, and now the club are looking for business opportunities until the striker’s deal expires.
Greenwood has a contract until 2025, and instead of terminating his deal, Manchester United now seem open to loaning him out or selling him outright. Financially, the decision could benefit the Red Devils, but it could trigger another fan backlash in what seems like a U-Turn from the club.
Earlier today, Lazio were linked with a move, although whether it is on a loan or permanent basis remains unclear. No English club are keen on being anywhere near to the beleaguered striker, and he can only revive his career with a move abroad.
Weeks ago, Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq were linked. Hut the club rebuffed those claims, as they see signing such a controversial player would hurt the league’s image. Greenwood threads on no man’s land with hardly any club chasing his signature.
However, Getafe may have shown an interest in signing the 21-year-old attacker, as the La Liga side could sound out a loan move. Manchester United may open their doors over such a deal, but they might dwell upon certain conditions.
While Getafe are mentioned, their seriousness about pursuing such a controversial deal remains unclear. Moving away from Manchester United could suit Greenwood in his chances of reviving his footballing career, but many highly doubt whether it will happen.
Manchester United will have to pay off the striker in the event of a contract termination. From their latest stance, they do not seem too keen to do that and instead extract every last drop of the player’s value via a loan deal or a permanent transfer.
