Chelsea could rekindle their interest in Edson Alvarez as Mauricio Pochettino remains desperate to add midfield depth to his squad.
According to The Times, Chelsea are keen on Edson Alvarez and could rekindle their interest in the Mexican. Mauricio Pochettino will see this as a positive approach as the Argentine remains desperate to add midfield depth to his squad, with the position looking thin now.
Chelsea have a race against time to finalise their final squad for the Premier League season, with plenty of work to do with their squad. Several names are on the outgoing list, and the club desires many players to come in for the campaign.
Having lost depth in the midfield following a raft of departures, Chelsea are angling several moves in this window. For starters, Moises Caicedo remains their No.1 midfield target, but him alone won’t prove enough for Mauricio Pochettino.
In any case, they are far away from agreeing on a move for Caicedo after Brighton rejected their latest offer for the Ecuadorian. Moving away from the 21-year-old, Chelsea managed two signings last week. A €45 million move for Axel Disasi and another for midfielder Lesley Uguchukwu from Rennes.
Besides Caicedo, Chelsea are eager to sign another midfielder or two, with Leeds United’s Tyler Adams and Ajax’s Edson Alvarez on their list. The Mexican was part of their plans last summer, but the Dutch side refused the deal, citing they were barely left with any time to find a replacement.
The 25-year-old versatile midfielder can leave the Eredivisie side following a disappointing season. Alvarez saw a move to Borussia Dortmund breakdown in the early stages of the window but remains open to leaving Ajax.
West Ham are also interested in the midfielder, and now with Chelsea keen, he could have plenty of alternatives ahead of the month. Whether Chelsea can sign him and Caicedo on permanent deals remains the question, but they could cost combined fees of more than £120-130 million.
Chelsea also have other priorities, such as a new striker, but for now, the midfield depth seems crucial to Pochettino. Whether they start negotiations for the 25-year-old midfielder remains the question, but he is an option.
