Bayern Munich keen on David De Gea

Bayern Munich are considering a summer swoop for former Manchester United star David de Gea

According to the Bild journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, German champions Bayern Munich are eyeing a summer deal for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Spanish ace was one of the last players left at Old Trafford from the Sir Alex Ferguson era. While it was initially expected that he would stay on, De Gea ended up leaving the club when his contract expired earlier this summer and is now a free agent.

The 32-year-old has regressed in recent years but ended up winning the Premier League Golden Glove last season. There is still much he can offer and could rebuild his reputation in the right setup under the right manager.

To his credit, Thomas Tuchel oversaw the rise of Edouard Mendy at Chelsea while Kepa Arrizabalaga also redeemed himself to an extent. At 37, Manuel Neuer isn’t getting any younger and will need to be replaced sooner or later.

Yann Sommer was brought in as a short-term fix last January and the Swiss ace does not appear to have Tuchel’s blessing. With him linked with a summer exit, a new goalkeeper is on the agenda in Bavaria.

De Gea is a solid shot-stopper and can on his day prove to be a reliable last line of defence. He is, however, poor at collecting crosses and the less said about his ability to play out from the back the better. This is a far cry from what the Die Roten have come to expect from under Neuer.

However, landing a player of De Gea’s calibre for free would represent solid business. It will also help Bayern save funds that can be better utilised elsewhere. The German champions are linked with a blockbuster move for Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane this summer. Signing De Gea on a Bosman will allow Bayern to shift more funds towards signing the English skipper.

The 45-cap Spanish international is not the only goalkeeper on Die Roten’s radar. Others on the list include Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou, Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, Juventus custodian Wojciech Szczesny, Brentford star David Raya, Brighton & Hove Albion star Robert Sanchez, Dominik Kotarski from Thessaloniki and former Liverpool shot-stopper Kamil Grabara who now plays for Kopenhagen.
