Liverpool want to open contract renewal talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool are keen on extending the stay of Trent Alexander-Arnold, as talks could commence in the coming weeks.

According to Jacque Talbot via Give Me Sport, Liverpool are keen to open contract renewal talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold. The electric right-back has under two years left on his deal, with Jurgen Klopp eager to keep him for the long term.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a revelation since breaking through into the Liverpool first team. He has played a huge role in the success achieved by the club under Jurgen Klopp, and many want him to remain at Anfield for years to come.

The English international has proven his worth by playing massive roles in their recent Champions League triumph and ending a three-decade wait for the Premier League title. Top teams like Real Madrid are keen to snap him up if an opportunity arises. But Liverpool plan to keep him here for the longer term.

A few months ago, Liverpool planned on initiating discussions with the £180,000-a-week English international over a new deal. Alexander-Arnold has under two years left on his existing contract, and there is a mutual feeling to extend his stay.

Journalist Jacque Talbot insists Liverpool are keen to open talks with the player, but that may not happen immediately. The Merseysiders are not overly worried about his future but feel an extension is in order.

Talbot said, “They want to have talks with him over the summer period to get something done at that point. I think that’s a relative priority in terms of who is in their current squad.”

Alexander-Arnold has been imperious for the Reds, amassing 88 goal contributions in 273 appearances. Klopp introduced him to a different role at the tail end of last season, which saw him take up an inverted midfield role.

There is an expectation about Klopp retaining the English international, who is on £180,000-a-week wages, in a similar position. For now, Alexander-Arnold has massive expectations ahead of the new campaign, and contract talks will take a while to commence.

The report also states Liverpool want to offer a six-year deal. But the two parties might compromise on a shorter deal. For now, the Reds are focused on transfer activities and will continue to strengthen after the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.

They are keen to add more stars in midfield and at the back, with several options discussed so far. As for Alexander-Arnold, Klopp considers him one of the most important players in the squad and will continue to play a key role as contract talks ramp up in the background.
