Chelsea closely monitoring Rafa Marin situation

Chelsea are interested in having 21-year-old Real Madrid centre-back Rafa Marin in their ranks ahead of next season.

According to AS via Sport Witness, Chelsea are interested in securing the services of Rafa Marin and they have been closely monitoring the player for a while now. The 21-year-old defender’s future has been uncertain of late and is expected to push for a move elsewhere.

Marin has been a part of the Real Madrid youth academy since joining them back in the summer of 2016. He has since gone up the ranks and is currently a part of their reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla.

The 21-year-old has been an important part of the reserve team since the summer of 2021. But, he has failed to make his way into their first team. Marin is yet to make his debut for Los Blancos.

In the recently-concluded season, the Spaniard featured in a total of 39 matches. He was a rock in the defence and even contributed towards three goals. The 21-year-old played an important part in their impressive run in the Spanish third tier.

Real Madrid Castilla made it to the final of the Primera Federación playoffs but failed to win against Eldense. They were a win away from qualifying for the second division. And, with Real Madrid Castilla failing to make it into the second tier, chances of Marin staying at the club have reduced.

His contract runs out next summer, and Real Madrid are yet to put forward a contract renewal offer. As a result, the player is seriously considering his future. With Nacho’s contract extended and Jeses Vallejo still at the club, the 21-year-old’s door to the first team is closed for now.

With Real Catilla still in the third tier and the door to the first team closed, leaving the club seems a logical decision for the Spanish defender. Meanwhile, Chelsea are one of the clubs interested in him. The Blues have been closely monitoring him for a while now.

Signing a new defender is not their priority at this point in time. But, with Trevoh Chalobah in line to leave the club in the ongoing summer, signing Marin as a backup option could be a great bit of business for Chelsea.
