Newcastle United are eyeing a blockbuster summer deal for Napoli star Victor Osimhen
According to the Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t SportWitness), Premier League side Newcastle United are keen to land Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Nigerian goal scorer was a key part of Napoli’s Scudetto-winning side and also leads the race to land the Serie A golden boot for the 2022/23 season. One of the finest number nines in world football, Osimhen is attracting attention from several of Europe’s top clubs.
Beating the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain to land the player would be nothing short of a coup for Newcastle. Backed by middle-east wealth, the Magpies earned themselves a spot in the UEFA Champions League for next season. While they still have ways to go before challenging for the top titles, landing a player of Osimhen’s calibre will fast-track their development into a top side.
The Tyneside club were keen on Osimhen last summer but were in no position to bring him to St James Park. Now armed with a better profile and as a team on the rise, they are a far better destination for prospective players.
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is a difficult man to deal with and is not keen to sell his star player. However, every star has a price and it remains to be seen if Newcastle can make an offer that is too good for Napoli to turn down.
Newcastle went big on Alexander Isak last summer and the Swede has to his credit, performed. Callum Wilson has also stepped up with some excellent and key goals throughout the season. Adding Osimhen into the mix will in most likelihood relegate the latter to the bench at the expense of massively upgrading the Magpies’ frontline.
It will also send the message across that Newcastle are serious not just about competing for the top players but are also capable of getting deals over the line.
Playing in the Champions League gives them the opportunity to showcase just where the club is heading. A strong showing will speak for itself when it comes to recruitment over the coming years. For now, Osimhen remains the biggest name to be linked with the club ahead of the summer. Time will tell whether he is just the tip of the iceberg.
