Manchester United are ready to swap 28-year-old centre-back Victor Lindelof to land Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries.
According to Football Insider, Premier League giants Manchester United are ready to offer Swedish international Victor Lindelof in part-exchange to secure the services of Inter Milan ace Denzel Dumfries.
The Red Devils are currently in a state of rebuild. And the right-back spot is one that appears to be on the list. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag and looks set to leave Old Trafford next summer.
Diogo Dalot has been offered a new lease of life and is today the number one choice in the role. However, the Red Devils could do with an alternative who can not just offer cover but something different to that of the Portuguese international.
Dumfries is a two-way player capable of impressing at both ends of the pitch. Ten Hag will be familiar with him, having come up against the player while manager at Ajax. While the full-back’s time at the Giuseppe Meazza has had its moments, he is far from indispensable and has been touted with a move away for some time.
In fact, Manchester United were keen to get a deal done in January. But it proved difficult to get over the line. Any hope of renewing the interest in the summer has been given a shot in the arm thanks to Inter being on the lookout for a centre-back.
The Italian giants look likely to lose Milan Skriniar in the summer, while Alessandro Bastoni also continues to be linked with a move away. Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij are not getting any younger either, necessitating the need for young blood.
Lindelof, at 28, is in his prime and can be a star in the right system. He impressed at Euro 2020 and showcased the ability to thrive when given an opportunity. Good on the ball and strong in the air, he is the complete package and would be an asset for Inter.
The Swede is the third-choice centre-back at Manchester United this season and is unlikely to get the nod over Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez anytime soon. He has also failed to completely settle in England and has struggled with the physical style of football employed in the Premier League.
The less physical nature of the game would suit Lindelof’s style. And it could prove to be the catalyst that rekindles his fortunes. Inter tried unsuccessfully to land the 28-year-old in January but could now secure their man at the second time of asking.
The same goes for Dumfries, who would add some much-needed attacking verve from the wing-back slot for the Red Devils. It will add a new dimension to a promising Red Devils side that ten Hag is putting together. The Dutchman appears to be partial to players with Eredivisie experience. And it will be curious to see if he can fend off interest from other suitors.
A swap is, on paper, a win-win for both teams in key positions that need addressing. Time will tell whether the deal gets over the line or not in the summer.
