Aston Villa are interested in signing Martin Dubravka in the summer, as Emiliano Martinez could depart in the summer.
According to Football Insider, Martin Dubravka is a target for Aston Villa in the summer. Unai Emery might need an experienced replacement for Emiliano Martinez if the Argentine departs for a new challenge in the next window.
Unai Emery has changed the mentality of this Aston Villa side since replacing Steven Gerrard midway through the season. After a difficult start to the season, the Basque manager has helped them secure safety this season while he continues to target a European finish at the end of the campaign.
Since his arrival, Emery’s relationship with World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez has been frosty. The Spanish boss did not appreciate the keeper’s antics at the Qatar grand event and criticised his decisions in the recent loss to Arsenal.
While Martinez only signed a new deal with the club earlier in the season, his future is far from secure. Many clubs remain keen on signing the keeper in the summer. He might personally evaluate the options and move on if he can achieve European football next season.
Villa are already looking for replacements in the market, with Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka emerging as a target. The Magpies’ keeper has endured a difficult season, losing his place to summer arrival Nick Pope.
He was shipped out on loan to Manchester United, but Newcastle United recalled him from his spell at Old Trafford in January. Meanwhile, he remains cup-tied for the Magpies’ clash with the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup Final.
While Pope will return between the posts for Newcastle’s next Premier League clash, Dubravka may not have another chance for the Magpies this season. Hence a move away next season would make sense with Aston Villa interested.
Villa face competition from Brentford for the keeper. The Bees could also see their first-choice star David Raya depart amid tremendous interest from top clubs. Chelsea are among those keen on the Spaniard. So Brentford might also show an interest in Dubravka.
Villa may consider other options considering Dubravka but could look at his Premier League experience in the short term. Much will depend on Martinez’s decision to stay or depart, but with the ongoing problems between him and Emery, a departure seems likely.
