Liverpool, Manchester United main contenders to sign Cody Gakpo

Liverpool and Manchester United are vying to become main contenders for the signature of Cody Gakpo, who will cost a huge fee.

According to Soccer News via Gianluca Di Marzio, the competition for Cody Gakpo intensifies before the January window as Liverpool and Manchester United emerge as main contenders for the Dutchman. PSV Eindhoven are set to demand a huge fee for their star attacker, who is pencilled to make a move in the next window.

Cody Gakpo made a huge point with his performances at the FIFA World Cup, scoring in each of the three group games for the Netherlands. The Dutch unfortunately crashed out of the competition at the hands of finalists Argentina, but the PSV Eindhoven star caught the attention of several clubs.

Real Madrid were reportedly set to initiate discussions to understand the details of a move, while several clubs from the Premier League also remain keen. Manchester United have remained favourites since the end of the summer window, but recent developments bring tremendous competition for the Dutchman.

PSV’s in-demand attacker will reportedly cost more than €75 million if reports are accurate. Gakpo has had a tremendous season for clubs and country, scoring 18 goals and assisting as many in 34 games. He might have moved in the summer when Manchester United was hot on his heels, but his mind was preparing for the World Cup.

With the World Cup behind him, Gakpo could look forward to making a big switch, possibly to the Premier League. Liverpool are the latest team to enter the fray for the in-demand attacker as Jurgen Klopp eyes key reinforcements to his front line.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag had wanted Gakpo since last summer at Manchester United. While they were expected to make a move, Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure opens space for the in-demand attacker to arrive.

The Reds and Manchester United are the main contenders for the Dutchman, with the latter extremely confident of sealing a move in January. However, Gianluca Di Marzio doubts the absolute certainty of the transfer next month but was sure of a summer move.

Clubs could pay up for the in-demand attacker, as his presence would bring plenty of onus to the attacking setup at Liverpool or Manchester United. The big question so far are the costs involved in executing such a huge move.
