Jorginho prioritising Chelsea stay

Jorginho has every desire to continue his career at Chelsea, according to his agent, amid links with Barcelona.

Jorginho was one of those signings that instantly elevated the quality of the Chelsea squad. The Blues had to dig deep to compete for the Italian international a few years ago and have Maurizio Sarri to thank for signing him ahead of Manchester City.

While Sarri did not last long at Stamford Bridge, Jorginho has continuously upgraded his game each season to become one of Chelsea’s essential stars. He is their current midfield lynchpin, and his influence continues to grow.

Amid Chelsea’s uncertainties at the end of last season, they put a few essential ideas on the back burner. The club saw key players depart when their contracts expired, as they could not extend their deals. It was already too late when they came into the position to do so.

The departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen highlighted that fact. And for the second summer in a row, Chelsea are on the verge of losing another pair of influential stars, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

The former is keen to stay at Chelsea and continue his career at Stamford Bridge. That could also be the case with Jorginho, as the Italian international is ready to extend his stint in west London and see what the future holds.

Recent links with Barcelona have forced Chelsea fans from not speculating about Jorginho’s future. The player is steadily growing into Graham Potter’s plans, and the news that he would rather stay than depart will come as a boost.

Joao Santos, who represents Jorginho, recently commented about the midfielder’s situation. The agent’s comments on Fichajes highlighted the Italian international’s intention to stay put at Chelsea rather than walk away to a club like Barcelona.

Santos said, “His contract expires in June, but our priority is to negotiate with Chelsea, so we’re on it.” Santos also touched upon the links to Barcelona, suggesting it is his job to take meetings. He also insisted there were other clubs with which he has discussed, not necessarily about Jorginho.

He continued, “Barcelona? Maybe I talked about him or maybe about other players… I was there as well as in Madrid, Lyon and Valencia. It’s my job.”

Jorginho has proved his importance under at least four different Chelsea managers since joining the club. He has also been a force for his national side, helping them win the UEFA Euro 2020 crown last year. While there are reports about Chelsea looking to revamp their midfield recently, the news about Jorginho wanting to stay would be of utmost importance.

In recent years, he has been a crucial part of squads that have won the Europa League and Champions League crowns. Jorginho has played 200 senior games for Chelsea and hopes to add to the tally. Whether Chelsea are on the same page as him remains unclear. Still, Todd Boehly will look at the prospect of re-signing the Italian rather than splashing elsewhere on a replacement in the immediate term.
