La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly prepared to fork out up to €10 million to sign Thomas Meunier from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Thomas Meunier has become the new top target to bolster the right-back berth for Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window. But the Catalan giants are only willing to shell out up to €10 million to sign the Belgian full-back from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
Thomas Meunier has been one of the best right-backs in Europe in the last decade, with his stock rising since establishing a foothold in the Club Brugge first-team squad. The 30-year-old enjoyed a fruitful four-year stint with Paris Saint-Germain after that and has gone from strength to strength since joining Borussia Dortmund nearly two years ago.
The Belgian international has done well to recover from fitness setbacks at Borussia Dortmund, becoming a regular for club and country in the last couple of seasons. Meunier has turned out 62 times for the Bundesliga giants, chipping in with three goals and seven assists. But he can leave Dortmund this summer amid interest from Barcelona.
Barcelona’s primary objective this summer was to sign Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea as a short-term replacement for Dani Alves. But the veteran Spanish defender decided to snub Barcelona to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge by signing a new Chelsea contract. Meunier has emerged as a viable alternative to Azpilicueta since then.
Recent reports have claimed that the Belgian international is the new priority target for the right-back berth for Barcelona. But his price tag might pose a problem for the Blaugrana, with Borussia Dortmund demanding well over €10 million to part ways with Meunier in the ongoing transfer window.
However, the Catalan giants are now ready to pay over the top to secure the services of the Borussia Dortmund full-back this summer, with SPORT claiming that they will only shell out up to €10 million to sign Meunier from the Bundesliga giants.
Barcelona will not have a shortage of alternatives for Meunier, with several other right-backs also on their radar. Meunier’s Borussia Dortmund teammate Mateu Morey is also reportedly a target for Barcelona. But it will be interesting to see if Meunier joins Barcelona in a deal worth around €10 million this summer.
