La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount over a possible summer move.
According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Mason Mount has popped up on the radar of Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Chelsea playmaker is one of several midfield targets the Blaugrana could pursue ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Mason Mount has established himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the Premier League since becoming a regular for Chelsea. The 23-year-old has been instrumental in breaking the chain of Chelsea academy products perennially being out on loan, with several other youth stars starting to become options for the Blues, especially in the wake of the crippling sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich.
The English international has enjoyed a decent 2021/22 campaign, amassing eight goals and 12 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. Mount’s progress at Chelsea has not gone unnoticed, with one of the biggest clubs in the world – Barcelona – setting sights on him over a possible move in the summer transfer window.
The Catalan giants have already reached an agreement with Franck Kessie over a possible Bosman move, so it is hard to see the need for another midfield addition. While Kessie and Mount possess widely different skill sets, the presence of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi, and Nico Gonzalez means another player might not fit in the scheme of things.
While Mount can play as a wide-attacker, he flourishes better as a no. 8 or a no. 10, meaning the interest from Barcelona is somewhat surprising. But the Chelsea playmaker is seemingly a target for the Blaugrana heading into the summer transfer window, so it will be interesting to see how he fits at Camp Nou.
Meanwhile, Chelsea should put up a strong resistance to keep hold of the 23-year-old, especially with the current sanctions prohibiting them from making new signings in the summer transfer window. Even Mount, for his part, will likely hesitate in leaving Chelsea for Barcelona, especially considering he has a prominent role under Thomas Tuchel.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can prise the 23-year-old English international away from Chelsea in the summer transfer window as they continue laying down their plans to rebuild their squad.
