Barcelona are reportedly accelerating their efforts to secure the services of Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen in a Bosman move in the summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will be stepping up their efforts to sign Andreas Christensen in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants have contacted the Chelsea defender’s representatives to reach an agreement over a free transfer.
Andreas Christensen has been with Chelsea since arriving from Brondby IF in July 2012, but it was only in the 2017/18 season that he made his first-team breakthrough. The Danish international has come leaps and bounds in the last few years and has been playing the best football of his career under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel.
To date, Christensen has made 146 appearances for Chelsea, chipping in with one goal and two assists along the way. The Dane’s contract situation has put the Blues in a spot of bother, though, as he has entered the final six months of his current deal. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona.
The Catalan giants signed Eric Garcia last summer, but the Spanish international has often left a lot to be desired. With Gerard Pique in the twilight of his illustrious career and Samuel Umtiti deemed surplus to requirements, Barcelona must look for a centre-back in the transfer market once again.
Christensen has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with his impending status as a free agent further making him an appealing prospect. The Blaugrana will hope that Chelsea’s valiant attempts to secure the Danish international’s long-term future bear no fruit.
Recent reports have even claimed that Barcelona could attempt to sign Christensen in January to stave off competition for his signature. But it looks like a summer switch is likely, although the La Liga heavyweights have intensified their efforts to land the 25-year-old Chelsea defender.
Christensen’s representatives have been contacted, and Barcelona will aim to reach a pre-contract agreement with him in the coming days. Christensen is not the only Chelsea defender linked with Barcelona, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger also on their radar. But the Dane remains a key target, and talks between the two parties will be accelerating imminently.
