Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closely monitoring the situation of Samir Handanovic, who could leave Inter Milan in the summer.
According to reputed Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Samir Handanovic is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window. The 37-year-old goalkeeper could leave Serie A giants Inter Milan after the ongoing season ends.
Samir Handanovic has spent most of his senior footballing career in Italy, with his first foray in the country coming back in 2004. However, after joining Inter Milan in July 2012, the Slovenian shot-stopper established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A.
To date, the 37-year-old has featured 414 times for Inter Milan, keeping 151 clean sheets along the way. Handanovic has also spent the last couple of years as the Nerazzurri’s club captain. However, the veteran goalkeeper’s time at the Serie A club could be drawing to a close, with his contract set to run out in the summer. Such a situation has captured the attention of Tottenham Hotspur.
The interest from Tottenham is surprising yet somewhat understandable. That is because Hugo Lloris’s long-term future is shrouded in uncertainty, as the French international is in the final year of his current contract. With the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner also in the twilight of his career, the north Londoners are attempting to lay down a succession plan for him.
However, Handanovic is older than Lloris and might only be a solution for a couple of years at best. Such an investment could force Tottenham to dip their toes in the transfer market once again soon, and they could be better served pursuing someone like Dean Henderson, who is unsettled at Manchester United.
Interestingly, Henderson has also been linked with Inter Milan as a possible successor for Handanovic. However, the Serie A champions lead the race to sign Andre Onana on a Bosman move in the summer. And it is Onana’s arrival that could prompt Handanovic to depart San Siro as a free agent.
However, signing Handanovic might not be a prudent move on Tottenham’s part irrespective of what the future holds for Lloris. As things stand, Lloris is heavily linked with OGC Nice, with Spurs desperately attempting to tie him down to a new contract. As for the pursuit of Handanovic, it will be interesting to see if the 37-year-old is pursued by Tottenham in the summer.
