As quoted by Goal, Marc Guehi has spoken up about his decision to leave Chelsea in the summer transfer window. The 21-year-old is insistent that the choice of calling it quits at the west London club, iterating that it was the right decision for him and his future at the club.
Marc Guehi spent 14 years at Chelsea, having joined the club’s famed academy as a seven-year-old in 2007. After making swift progress through the ranks at the club, the youngster came on the fringes of the first-team setup two years ago, but could never really make a breakthrough in the senior side.
While Guehi did make a couple of appearances for the Blues, it was while on loan at Swansea City that he finally managed to make his name. The season-long spell with the Swans saw him impress in the Championship before returning to Chelsea this past summer.
However, Guehi was determined to become a first-team regular at a club, which was an opportunity that was not forthcoming at Chelsea. As a result, he ended up joining Crystal Palace, thereby bringing an end to his 14-year stint at Chelsea. And the 21-year-old has justified his decision to exit Stamford Bridge.
Guehi said, “It wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave Chelsea. I was at the club for so long – since I was seven years old. I am extremely grateful for everyone who has helped me get so far and it’s because of them that I’m here. I felt like it was the right decision for me to move to Palace.”
“I wanted to play regular football at a high level in the Premier League and test myself to see how far I can go. I think I will really improve myself. So looking at it that way, I think it was the right decision. My mentality is to get the most out of myself.”
Crystal Palace were one of the busiest clubs across Europe in the summer transfer window, having released a bunch of players while signing as many as eight players. The likes of Michael Olise, Will Hughes, Joachim Andersen and Odsonne Edouard arrived at Selhurst Park, with Guehi one of two Chelsea players to join the Eagles – Conor Gallagher being the other, albeit on loan.
