Manchester City are reportedly eyeing Erling Haaland as Sergio Aguero’s successor when the Argentine calls time on his spell at Etihad.
According to an exclusive report by 90 min, Manchester City have set their sights on Norwegian striker Erling Haaland over a future move. The Premier League champions view the Borussia Dortmund star as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero.
Haaland has taken the footballing world by storm this season. A stunning first half of the season at Red Bull Salzburg, where he had a fabulous return of 28 goals and 7 assists in just 22 appearances, saw him being linked with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona.
A move eventually failed to materialise for either club, as Borussia Dortmund swooped him away instead. The teenage prodigy has made a scintillating start at Dortmund, with 8 goals in just 280 minutes of action at the club. As a result, Haaland remains on the radars of top clubs, with Premier League champions Manchester City, in particular, seemingly showing an interest.
At Manchester City, Sergio Aguero has been a fine asset for nearly a decade now. The Argentine has been one of the greatest strikers to have ever played in the Premier League and has recently became the highest-scoring foreign player in the competition’s history.
However, Aguero is now on the wrong side of 30 and Manchester City are typically laying down a succession plan for one of their greatest ever players. While City have no intention to replace Aguero anytime soon, they are leaving it up to the 31-year-old to decide his future.
In such a scenario, it is important to keep their options open, which is exactly what they are doing by targeting Haaland. With the 19-year-old wonderkid still in the nascent stages of his career, he could be the ideal long-term replacement for Aguero. His release clause, recently revealed to be in the region of €75 million, should not pose a problem either.
With Gabriel Jesus failing to remain consistent since joining the club, having another option in Haaland could be the right way forward. Manchester City are in touch with his father and agent, Alf-Inge Haaland, who spent three years at the club, and are hoping to make good on their relationship with their former player.
A summer move is unlikely, unless Aguero decides to leave the club at the end of the season. For now, Haaland appears to be on top of Manchester City’s wishlist and they can be expected to launch the offensive for the 19-year-old when the Argentine calls time on his spell at Etihad.
