Liverpool reportedly wanted to sign breakthrough star Presnel Kimpembe from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo have claimed that Liverpool were keen on moving for defensive starlet Presnel Kimpembe in the recently concluded summer transfer window. The youngster has been an integral part of the French champions’ recent dominance in youth competitions all across Europe and was reportedly on Liverpool’s radar.
Unai Emery has favoured the 21-year-old over established names like Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and David Luiz in the centre of the Paris Saint-Germain defence. Kimpembe has been involved in each and every minute of the club’s Ligue 1 campaign thus far and seems to have broken through into the first-team successfully under the former Sevilla manager (stats via whoscored).
Reports revealed earlier that before Chelsea eventually signed David Luiz from the club on deadline day, the Blues were actually more interested in Kimpembe and had set their sights on securing a transfer for the youngster. But, Conte’s preference of a more experienced centre-back made Chelsea cool their interest in the player, which seems to have worked out for the better for both Kimpembe and PSG, as of now.
That the PSG hierarchy let go of David Luiz could be chalked down as another indication of Emery and the club’s faith in the French defender. Now, Mundo Deportivo has claimed that Chelsea were not the only club after Kimpembe in the summer with Liverpool also targeting the 21-year-old.
The Spanish publication has added that Jurgen Klopp was impressed by the player’s pedigree and wanted to secure the player on a permanent basis, as did clubs like AS Monaco, AS Saint Etienne and a few others. The interest was mainly due to Kimpembe’s insecurity over his role at the club with the player rejecting a contract extension in July, 2016, which alerted these clubs to the possibility of a move.
Things have however changed since July and Kimpembe is reportedly impressed and happy with the faith shown in him by Unai Emery and is considering sitting down with the club officials to negotiate a contract extension. Mundo has reported that PSG are hopeful of extending Kimpembe’s current deal that expires in 2018 to at least 2021.
Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool, though, could go in for the player again in the future as one thing is for sure, Kimpembe’s star is on the rise and it appears to be just the very threshold of many things to come in the youngster’s career.
