VFL Wolfsburg director Klaus Allofs, . while speaking to German media outlet Die Welt, revealed why Wolfsburg allowed Kevin de Bruyne, once a prized Wolfsburg asset, to complete his fifth transfer in four years and become Manchester City’s record signing during the summer transfer window.
Following an unsuccessful spell with Premier League champions Chelsea, the former Werder Bremen starlet kick-started his career under Dieter Hecking as he was directly involved in 57 goals in 73 appearances for the Wolves and it is true to say that his wizardry has not diminished even a bit at the back of his second Premier League switch.
The Wolfsburg director revealed that they made efforts to keep hold of their talisman, but gave up when the Citizens came knocking with a ludicrous offer. He also claimed that they let him go, despite the Belgian midfielder being highly influential, only because of the fact that the offer Manuel Pellegrini tabled was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take his career to a whole new level on all grounds.
Klaus Allofs also put an accent on the spending capacity of a few European powerhouses as he stated that they would be left helpless in the event of one of the high-spenders knocking at their doors for one of their players.
“We spent a long time weighing up all our options and trying to keep Kevin at Wolfsburg. But at some point, we reached the conclusion that it would be best to allow him to move. When a player has an offer from another team where he can make four times as much money, you have to take into account what such an offer does to a player.
“Kevin received an offer that could very well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There is no guarantee that he would ever get such an offer again. We have certain limits that teams like Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona or Bayern Munich do not have. It is totally unrealistic to claim that nobody can lure players away from us.”
Wolfsburg visit another high-spenders in Manchester United on Wednesday night with a view of maintaining the momentum that they had apparently gained from the 1-0 victory over Moscow at Volkswagen Arena in Champions League last week, but Anthony Martial and the rest of the Red Devils roster can be expected to put on a show.
