Arsene Wenger has responded to claims from Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho that Arsenal FC have abandoned their cautious transfer approach by stating that he does not care what others think.
Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho had taken a dig at Arsene Wenger by stating that the Arsenal manager spends more than what people think he does.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Mourinho said: a If you add up the amounts the clubs have spent in the last three or four years I think maybe you will find a surprise.
a Get a calculator. That is one of the easiest things to do. It leaves no space for speculation. If you want to be honest, objective and pragmatic it is the easiest job for a manager or a journalist to do.
a They have bought a fantastic goalkeeper and that is a position which is very important in a team.
. a If you put Ozil plus Sanchez, plus Chambers, plus Debuchy you will maybe find a surprise.a
“We do not listen too much to what people think or say”
Responding to Mourinho’s comment, Wenger insisted that Arsenal FC spend within their means, and will not fret too much about opinions from others.
“We spend when we think we have to spend and do not listen too much to what people think or say,” Wenger was quoted saying by ESPN FC.
“We just try to make the right decisions. When we have the money available, we spend it. When we don’t have the money, we don’t spend the money we haven’t got.”
Wenger rejects claim they are title contenders because of spending
Jose Mourinho suggested in his comments that Arsenal FC are now title contenders because of their two-year spending spree that saw them buy the likes of Ozil, Sanchez, Chambers etc.
However, rejecting those claims, Arsene Wenger said that Arsenal FC still lead the way on producing home-grown talent.
“I believe that one day if you make real statistics of the players we have developed here and compare them to the other clubs, you will be surprised,” Wenger was quoted saying by ESPN FC.
“I think what you want is not to listen too much to what people say, because sometimes in the same week I get two different reproaches: one I don’t spend enough and one too much.
“I believe if you want to create success, which we want desperately, is to focus on inside and try to do as well as we can, believe in the football we want to play, play it as well as we can and let other people talk.”
