The Battle for the Crown
The battle for the Premier League title was a two-horse race a couple of seasons ago and it could only be decided by goal difference. The story seems very much the same this time too. Manchester City are in a familiar position, where the title loss for them would only be by their failure to win in their remaining two games.Ai?? Having conceded 9 goals fewer than Liverpool, a victory in their last fixture will ensure another piece of silverware in Cityai??i??s cabinet.
Liverpool have landed themselves at a disadvantage after facing Crystal Palace away from Anfield. Having started strongly and scoring three, they managed to concede three in the last eleven minutes, thereby taking away only one point. The Reds, who seemed sure-shot winners a few weeks ago might have celebrated a bit too soon, as their hopes of silverware rest on conditions beyond their control.
Chelseaai??i??s struggle against Norwich saw two teams fighting different battles – one for survival and the other for glory. Being inseparable in the scoring department they both returned home disappointed with a shoddy job and a result not in favour of either. The only mathematical possibility for Chelsea to win the title will be for them to win their last game and Manchester City and Liverpool losing all their games from here on.
The Europa Spots
Never has the mid table madness entertained the world of football as much as it has this season in the Premier League. Manchester United,Ai??the defending champions, find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Lurking in a lowly 7th place, they rid their dignity and hope for their bitter rivals Arsenal to beat Hull City in the FA Cup final so that the Europa League spot isn’t stolen away from them, should they finish where they are. With a loss against Sunderland at home, they will look to winning their final two fixtures to leap frog Tottenham and confirm any chance of European Football.
Evertonai??i??s loss meant their short run at beating Arsenal has come to an end and are confined to their 5th place finish and a season well ended under the sensational new manager, Roberto Martinez. While all Liverpool fans for once hoped their Merseyside rivals win, Everton couldn’t find the back of the net against probable champions Manchester City even though they looked a lot more threatening in the second half of the game.
Tottenham suffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to city rivals West Ham and ensured that there remains a remote chance they might allow Manchester United to jump ahead of them. However their last game against Aston Villa will be a decisive one, for a victory will ensure safety of encroachment from the Red Devils. This game would also ear mark the end of the Sherwood era and an end to another embarrassing season where they finish below rivals Arsenal.
The Relegation Battles
The week brought tears to many as Cardiff and Fulham registered losses and became the first two teams to be relegated this season. Newcastle United overcame a 6 game losing streak and won 3 goals to 1 at home against relegation battlers Cardiff City. This means a victory for Cardiff in their final Premier League game would be a mere consolation to render hope that they do not finish last.
Fulham, under Felix Magath, looked revived as they managed to gather a few points off their last few fixtures. However consistent victories were something that evaded the team and with their four-one slump to Stoke City, they were confined to the relegation zone. A victory at home to Crystal Palace would only be a show of gratitude for the undying support of their London fans as they will not witness top flight football for another season at least.
Norwich did what Liverpool struggled to do against a resilient Mourinhoai??i??s Chelsea. Although they did not find the back of the net, they did end Chelseaai??i??s hope of winning the title. With two points dropped in the fixture, their only hope of survival would be an uphill task. A victory against Arsenal and hope that Sunderland lose to Swansea is the only way Norwich can survive the relegation zone. While Sunderland have two easy games in hand it looks inevitable that Norwich is off to the Championship next season with a tough fixture ahead.
