ArsenalAi??playmaker Mesut Ozil is facing at least three weeks on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring in Tuesday’s Champions League exit at Bayern Munich.
Tomas Rosicky replaced the 42m summer signing at the break as Arsenal, who needed to win by a two goal margin to have any hope of progressing, could only manage a 1-1 draw against the Bavarians.
Speaking to the press after the game, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed that it was the hamstring injury which forced him to take Ozil off during the half-time break against Bayern last night.
After the game, Ozil was examined by Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, the Bayern and Germany national team doctor who confirmed that it was a hamstring injury. However, the extent of the injury is not yet clear and scans later today will reveal how serious the injury is.
While the German was not permitted to speak to either English or German media after the game, Arsene Wenger told Sky Germany:
“Ozil’s injury is quite bad.
“Ozil has a hamstring that looks quite serious.
“I don’t know how long. For sure he will miss Tottenham. He’s out.
“We have to make a scan to see how bad it is but he’s out for a few weeks. We hope it’s not so bad.”
Ozilai??i??s injury will undoubtedly be a major blow for Arsenal and the Gunners will certainly be hoping that Ozilai??i??s injury is not as serious as it is being feared since they have already lost England midfielder Jack Wilshere for at least six weeks with a foot injury.
Arsenal are seven points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea with a game in hand over them. They have a tough run of fixtures coming up in March ai??i?? Arsenal face TottenhamAi??on Sunday (March 16) before an away trip to ChelseaAi??on March 22 followed by home games against Swansea on March 25 and Manchester CityAi??on March 29.
Any slip-up in these games would effectively end Arsenalai??i??s title challenge as they would be left with an almost insurmountable gap with too few games to catch-up. However, if they do manage to get positive results against Chelsea and Manchester City in particular, it would not only give them some much needed confidence in the final run-in but it will also potentially narrow the gap on the leaders Chelsea to just one point.
The exit from the Champions League reduces the possibility of winning silverware for Arsenal. However, with the Premier League not yet out of their reach, they will look to refocus their energies on two fronts. Arsenal are also through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup where they will play Wigan, and with all other major Premier League sides out of the tournament, Arsenal have a great chance of winning some silverware this season.
