There is a strange resemblance between the Old Trafford of December 1970 and today. As Sir Alex Ferguson watches the side which he built get rolled over under new management, the mind wanders to a similar period in the winter of 1970.
Pat Crerand said of Sir Matt Busby that ai???He is Old Traffordai???, so there was little surprise when the Bellshill born Scot returned to manage his beloved Manchester United. The man he replaced – Wilf McGuinness, is said to have shown little appetite for the job which was then, like now, the biggest job in British football.
Wilf was a Manchester lad through and through and made his debut for the Red Devils against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1955 aged just 18. He played as a wing half which can be described as a crossover between a modern day winger and full back. His playing career was though brutally cut short at 22 following a broken leg. He continued to be involved with the club after recovering from injury and eventually succeeded Jimmy Murphy as the reserve team manager in 1964.
Manchester United had been in a state of steady decline during the 1968-69 season. They eventually finished a lowly 11th after collecting only 42 points from their 42 games. The reason for the clubai??i??s lackadaisical form could be attributed to Sir Matt announcing his decision to step down as manager at the end of the season. Following this announcement there were widespread rumours that Jock Stein or Don Revie would ultimately replace the great Scot.
However, it was in Wilf McGuinness that Sir Matt Busby saw a Manchester United manager and to the surprise of many which included Wilf himself he was given the post. Busby took over as the general manager of the club and would be the one dealing with the board, talking with the press and taking care of the transfer business. Sir Matt had made no secret of the fact that at the age of 60 he could not manage a club the size of United. He was of the opinion that a tracksuited manager was needed to run the daily operations and he felt that McGuinness was the right man for the job.
What Sir Matt failed to factor in was that at 31 years of age McGuinness was younger than a few of the United players. More importantly, he had no managerial credentials and as a player was nowhere near the quality of Unitedai??i??s dressing room which contained the likes of Best, Charlton and Law. The players never really bought Wilfai??i??s style of running things as they were more used to Busbyai??i??s approach of ai???go out and enjoy yourselfai??i??.
However, it was not all his fault. Due to the presence of Sir Matt Busby at such close quarters, McGuinness never felt that he was the man in charge. When he wanted to bring in Colin Todd, Mick Mills and Malcolm Macdonald, Busby gave him instead Ian Ure. So it came as no surprise that United finished 8th in the 1969-70 season.
To put it simply Wilf McGuinness did not have the man management skills to manage a club of Unitedai??i??s size and stature. There was one incident on the eve of Unitedai??i??s FA Cup semi-final replay against Leeds United which illustrated this perfectly. Wilf had requested all his players to rest ahead of the big game but Best being Best befriended a woman at the bar and spent the afternoon in her room. When McGuinness found out about this transgression he went to Busby for advice instead of taking action himself. Busby did nothing and just as fate would have it Best missed the best of the game and United lost. Everyone blamed McGuinness for this incident right from the press who thought that Best looked off colour, to the players who thought that Best should have been disciplined, to Best himself who blamed Wilf for not being Busby.
Manchester United started the 1970-71 season much like the way they had ended the previous one, in free-fall. They won only 5 out of their first 23 league games. Following a 4-4 draw with Derby County on Boxing Day in 1970 Busby returned as the manager of Manchester United. United did not fare a lot better under Sir Matt as they again finished eighth albeit with a lower number of points.
Fast forward to the present day and there is a lot of similarity in what took place then and what is happening now. Like McGuinness, David Moyes has inherited a group of winners. Whereas McGuinness took charge of a side which had just won the European Cup, Moyes has taken over the defending league champions. Like McGuinness, Moyes has very large boots to fill. Whereas Busby was Mr. Manchester United in 1969, Ferguson is the present holder of the moniker. Like McGuinness, Moyes has to handle players who give the impression that they are bigger than the club. Wilf had to handle George Best and Moyes has still not completely resolved the Wayne Rooney saga.
But in between all these similarities is a glaring difference between the two situations. Whereas McGuinness was incharge of just the first team, Moyes controls all the football related activities at Old Trafford be it dealing with the press, the board or managing transfers. It is this difference alone which can save Moyes from having the same fate as McGuinness. But if he fails there would be no excuses for Moyes unlike McGuinness.
