England secured their second win in as many Euro 2016 qualifying matches as they did enough to see off their lowly opponents.
Goals from Phil Jagielka, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Andros Townsend and an own goal from Alex Della Valle helped England cruise to a 5-0 win over San Marino last night.
England manager Roy Hodgson still felt his side could have done more, “I canai??i??t fault the players for their application throughout the game and Iai??i??m really pleased weai??i??ve got this game behind us. Theyai??i??re never easy games to play but weai??i??ve won it very comfortably and weai??i??ve added five goals to our tally.”
England made four changes from the Switzerland game last time out including a first start for Calum Chambers who was visibly delighted with his full England debut.
“It was a good result, we can take things out of the game that we thought went really well and that we practiced and worked on on the training field.”, he told TheFA.com after the game.
“Itai??i??s an honour to play for my country and a great experience for me to get a start. Hopefully there will be more to come.”
“Iai??i??m really enjoying it. All the lads have been really welcoming and the staff have been great. The training is going really well, Iai??i??m just going to try my hardest in training and in games when I get the opportunities.”
It was a fairly straightforward night for Hodgsonai??i??s men who enjoyed 78 percent ball possession and restricted San Marino to only two shots on Joe Hartai??i??s goal.
Hodgson said: “Itai??i??s a job well done. The crowd were fantastic ai??i?? theyai??i??ve had an enjoyable night and saw a lot of attacking football and saw five goals and there couldai??i??ve been a few more.”
“In the first half of these games when a very fit and healthy team are getting 10 men behind the ball and giving you no space to play, thatai??i??s the time youai??i??ve got to wear them down and keep plugging away.”
“Youai??i??ve got to keep doing the right things knowing that if you do that and score one or two goals, in the second half itai??i??s going to open up and youai??i??ll get chances for lots and lots of goals.”
“So the way the players approached it was very good and of course in the second half, as San Marino tired a bit more, our passing tempo was quicker and we created some very good chances and Jack Wilshere found some very good forward passes.”
Hodgson added: “The thing that impressed me most in the game was the fact that at 5-0, on the one or two occasions we lost the ball, we had three or four players sprinting back to try and win back possession.”
“That type of recovery run and desire ai??i?? in a game youai??i??ve wrapped up a long time ago ai??i?? is a very commendable trait.”
Man of the Match Jack Wilshere echoed the sentiments of his manager and suggested that his team were confident of the win ahead of this match. “We did what we had to do,” he said. “We knew we were going to win, it’s a matter of keeping concentration and keeping going.”
“We know once we got it [the first goal] we could get a few. It was a very professional performance. We showed them respect and kept going.”
“I’m happy to play either. I enjoy getting forward and I enjoy getting on the ball and starting attacks.We didn’t play against one of the top nations in the world but we had to do a job and we kept going.”
England travel next to Tallinn this Sunday to take on Estonia.
