A glorified friendly. The most pointless piece of silverware. An insignificant curtain raiser. Call it what you want, but Borussia Dortmundai??i??s performance in the DFL Supercup against Bayern Munich has given the club lots of reason to look optimistically at the season ahead. Some might argue that this was far from a full strength Bayern side using a formation most alien to them. But the manner in which Dortmund dismantled this Bayern side is surely something to read into. Here are four points from the Supercup triumph that bode in favor of a good season that lies ahead of BVB.
Attacking options aplenty
How would Dortmund cope without Robert Lewandowski? Was there anyone who could fill in the massive void left by the Polish striker? Last nightai??i??s game might not have given us concrete answers to these questions but one thing for certain is that JA?rgen Klopp now has a lot more to choose from in the attacking department. Letai??i??s not forget that this was a Dortmund side that didnai??i??t have Marco Reus, Jakub Blaczszykowski and Ai??lkay GA?ndoAYan.
Despite these absentees, Dortmund tore apart the Bayern defense time and again, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the center of it all. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Jonas Hofmann, both of whom had indifferent seasons last year, played with a confidence that theyai??i??d lacked so badly, the former even getting his name on the scoresheet. New addition Ciro Immobile might not have opened his account but his dribbling and positioning were hugely positive signs. And weai??i??re still to see Dong-Won Ji and Adrian Ramos get long enough outings. The front half of the Dortmund engine looks good to go!
Sokratis ai??i?? The leader of the pack
For anyone who has watched Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the Serie A, the Greek center backai??i??s rise in the Bundesliga would be unfathomable. From comical relief at Milan, he turned into a shining light in an otherwise shaky Werder Bremen defense before moving to Dortmund as backup to Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels. But injury layoffs to both Subotic and Hummels forced Sokratis into the heart of the Dortmund defense for most of last season and he was nothing short of brilliant.
Going up against his former teammate, Lewandowski, on Wednesday, Sokratis was expected to have his hands full. After all, Lewandowski is one of the best and most complete strikers in world football today. Yet it was Sokratis who walked out of the Signal Iduna Park with his head held high and his goal unperturbed. The 26-year-old completely shut down Lewandowski, rendering Bayernai??i??s most potent attacking threat useless. From the look of things, Subotic and Hummels are going to have to battle it out for the other center back position.
Aubameyang and a potential plan B
Lewandowskiai??i??s departure and the subsequent acquisition of three strikers indicate that Klopp may deploy a system with two strikers over the course of this season. Aubameyang struggled in a wide role last season, having been used primarily as a center forward at Saint Etienne. This shift to the two striker system, which we saw against Bayern, puts Aubameyang in a far more familiar role. With Bayern using a three man backline, Dortmund looked comfortable hoofing hopeful balls up field. Aubameyangai??i??s primary asset, his inhuman speed, works wonderfully with this strategy.
The Gabonese speedster regularly got in behind the Bayern defense, thus proving to be a regular threat during the game. It was this same consistency over the course of a game that was greatly lacking in Aubameyangai??i??s game last season, and the outing against Bayern is proof that the 25-year-old is indeed settling into Kloppai??i??s system.
Dortmundai??i??s intricate counter attacking often failed against defensive units last season. The Premier League-esque, hoof and run style that we saw against Bayern, may be the answer to this problem. It may well be the way to get the best out of Aubameyang too. Klopp may have hit two birds with one stone here.
Guardiolaai??i??s risky flirtations with a three man backline
A three man backline is one of the most alien concepts to the Bundesliga today. But Pep Guardiola seems to think that this is the way forward for Bayern Munich. Getting used to this drastically different system will take a while, even for a side so supremely talented. Even with Thiago, Bastian Schweinsteiger and the entire gang back to full fitness, this isnai??i??t going to be an easy task.
While Bayern may master this formation eventually, the first few weeks will be hard. Dortmund, on the other hand, look a far more comfortable and cohesive unit. With Bayern looking to find their feet early on, Dortmund will have to ensure that they can at least match the otherwise unstoppable Bavarians. The first few weeks in the league are going to be hugely crucial; they will be the key to success for BVB.
