A new look Irish midfield was fielded in this game, with Gibson coming back into the starting line-up, while Germany fielded a line-up without a natural striker. The home side got an early lead in the game as Sami Khedira scored with a deflected shot. The Real Madrid midfielder was set up by Philipp Lahm after he intercepted a ball in the center of the park. At that moment Irish fans must have feared for the worst, but Germany failed to extend their lead in the first half, despite dominating possession and creating chances.
Finally, 13 minutes into the second half, the Germans managed to double their lead as Andre Schurrle scored a wonderful goal. Toni Kroos found him with a delicately chipped ball over the defence and the first touch of Schurrle, turn and the finish was nothing short of world class. Germany added another in the dying moments of the game as Mesut Ozil was put through by Kroos and the Arsenal man obliged with a composed finish. It was a wonderful counterattack from the German side.
The match ended with a bit of controversy as Robbie Keane, who didnai??i??t feature in this game due to an injury, clashed with Germany manager Joachim Low and the pair had to be separated in the end amidst heated arguments.

Low also applauded his teamai??i??s attacking prowess and said that they were the deserved winners of this game.
‘We have shown we are group leaders and deserved to be where we are having won eight of nine matches. We now have a little bone to pick with the Swedes after the first match.
