After a frenetic weekend of goal scoring in the English Premier League and Serie A, it’s time for the Champions League matches to take center stage.Ai?? While Matchday 3 saw some footballing giants secure easy wins at home, the other big guns like Arsenal, Internazionale and Manchester United came away with three points in their away fixtures.
The first group stage matches of Matchday 4 provide Arsenal and Chelsea a chance to nearly cement their top slot in the respective group stages, while AC Milan and Barcelona will battle it out to push the other to the second spot. Here’sAi?? a preview of the upcoming clashes on Tuesday night, featuring the clubs from groups E,F,G and H.
Group E ai??i?? Chelsea (England), Valencia (Spain), Bayer Leverkusen (Germany), Genk (Belgium)
Valencia v Leverkusen – Estadi de Mestalla, Nov 1 2011
The Spaniards took the lead in the reverse leg in Germany, but a spirited fightback by the home side saw Leverkusen grab three crucial points to propel them to second place in the group, four points clear of Valencia. If Valencia hope to progress to the group stages, they will have to win all their remaining fixtures – an uphill task for the Los Che. To make matters worse, they will miss the services of on-loan midfielder Sergio Canales, who is sidelined for six months with an anterior-cruciate ligament injury. Unai Emury will be hoping that his side capitalizes on their decent run of form in the La Liga and the home support to beat the Germans.
Bayer Leverkusen were dealt a blow when Michael Ballack sustained a broken nose in their recent win over Freiburg, but the Germans will be happy with a draw in this fixture as it assures them of the second spot behind Chelsea. Their win over the hosts in the last encounter ended a dismal run of seven games without a win against Spanish opponents, and they will leave no stone unturned to stop Valencia from edging closer in the group table. The match could see Valencia come out with all guns blazing, and Leverkusen looking to score goals on the counter; the home support and the desperate need to win could see the Los Che nick this one.
THT Prediction: Valencia 3-2 Leverkusen
THT Players To Watch Out For: Ever Banega (Valencia),Ai??Andre Schurrle (Leverkusen)
Genk v Chelsea – KRC Genk Arena, Nov 1 2011
The minnows were forced to face a rout at Stamford Bridge, with Torres taking advantage of their weakened defense. Being rank underdogs in this fixture, they have nothing to lose and will be looking to salvage a respectable point atleast in front of their home crowd. The Belgian side came away with successive wins in the Jupiler League, including a 5-4 away win over Club Brugge in the recent weekend. They have not won a single game in their entire stint in the Champions League (having played at this level nine years ago), and this is their chance of get off the mark.
Chelsea endured an unforgettable weekend, watching their defense crumble to bits against an equally porous but more determined Arsenal side to leak five goals, the most conceded at Stamford Bridge since 1989, thereby handing Andre Villas-Boas his second successive league loss. The midweek extra-time win over Everton and the relentless game against the Gunners has cost the Blues a lot of energy; given the nature of the opponent and the squad depth, one can expect Villas-Boas to rest some key players. Drogba* is likely to start, with Anelka partnering him. Merieles, Romeu, David Luiz and McEachran could also feature in the starting lineup.Ai?? Chelsea have enough quality and depth in their ranks to secure a comfortable away win.
*Latest update:Ai??Drogba and Mikel have not traveled to Belgium with the Chelsea squad.Ai??
THT Prediction: Genk 1-3 Chelsea
THT Players To Watch Out For: Oriol Romeu (Chelsea), Kevin De Bruyne (Genk)
Group F ai??i?? Arsenal (England), Marseille (France), Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Olympiacos (Greece)
Arsenal v Marseille – The Emirates Stadium, Nov 1 2011
The Gunners have seemingly put the worst behind them, having won eight of their last nine games on the trot. Their recovery has been attributed to the goal-scoring spree of Robin Van Persie, backed by timely contributions from other members of a new-look Arsenal side. Their thumping win over Chelsea has significantly raised the morale in the dressing room, and they will look to extend their good run with a win against the French team; a win will cement their position at the top of Group F. Park, Arshavin, Benayoun, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rosicky are certain to start, with Fabianski between the sticks and Vermaelen and Djourou in central defense – a team good enough to secure the desired result.
Their opponents, on the other hand, have had a mixed run of results in Ligue 1, and are languishing in 12th position in the league standings. Three wins on the trot have lent some confidence to Didier Deschamps’ side, and they will be looking to pay back Arsenal for their last gasp loss on their own home turf in the previous encounter. With no fresh injury concerns, the French outfit will look to attack Arsenal’s second string team and come away with atleast a point.
THT Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Marseille
THT Players To Watch Out For: Andrey Arshavin(Arsenal), Mathieu Valbuena(Marseille)
Borussia Dortmund v Olympiacos – BVB Stadion Dortmund, Nov 1 2011
The Germans have been the surprise package of the team – for all the wrong reasons. A side expected to compete for top honors following their stellar domestic performances last season, they have failed to make the cut on Europe’s grandest stage, lying at the bottom of the table with only a point from their home draw against Arsenal. They have suffered shocking results on the road, leaking six goals against Marseille and Olympiacos. They will need to pull their socks up and try to win all their remaining games, if they wish to avoid the ignominy of playing again in Europa League. Gotze, Kagawa, Perisic and Lewandowski will have to rise to the occasion in this crucial must-win game.
Borussia need to sort out their defense… and fast
Olympiacos are only slightly better than their opponents in the group standings, having already suffered losses against Arsenal and Marseille prior to their win over Dortmund. The Greeks will be looking to keep the heat on the top two teams in the group with a win over the Germans, and their good domestic run will give them the belief to come away with a result from the BVB Stadion. Marko Pantelic and Rafik Djebbour will pit their skills against the defensive duo of Hummels and Subotic, who tend to perform well in front of the home crowd.
THT Prediction: Dortmund 1-0 Olympiacos
THT Players To Watch Out For: Mario Gotze(Dortmund), Pantelic (Olympiacos)
Group G ai??i?? Porto (Portugal), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Zenit St.Petersburg (Russia), APOEL (Cyprus)
Zenit vs Shakhtarai??i?? Petrovski Stadion, Nov 1 2011
The Russian league leaders currently lie second in the group table, a point adrift of surprise package APOEL, and sharing the same number of points with Porto, albeit with a better goal difference. They succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in Cyprus before defeating Porto at home and securing a credible draw in Shakhtar’s lair. With the group being this tight – a mere 3 points separate the top and bottom teams – Zenit cannot afford to slip up if they intend to go to the round of 16. They will have the home advantage against the Ukrainian side, having won ten successive European games at this ground; a victory will put them at top of the table should APOEL drop points in the other Group G fixture.
Time to get one more medal.. but first win this game!
Shakhtar are a far cry from the same side which topped the group stages last year, beating the likes of Arsenal. They have not won a single game in the Champions League so far, and their run of four goals in three games in the group stages is a cause for concern for manager Mircea Lucescu, whose side boasts an abundance of attacking talent. Shakhtar will look to climb to the top two spots from this point,Ai?? and for this they need to win atleast two games; in their favor, they have managed to accomplish this feat in the last three years and have progressed to the Champions League round of 16 twice. There is optimism among the ranks that the Ukranian outfit can pull off the stunt.
THT Prediction: Zenit St.Petersburg 1-1 Shakhtar
THT Players To Watch Out For: Alexander Kerzhakov (Zenit St.Petersburg), Dentinho (Shakhtar)
APOEL vsAi??Porto -Ai??GSP Stadium, Nov 1 2011
It has been a dream run of sorts for the Cyproits, who beat Shakhtar in their own backyard and returned with a valuable point apiece in the two away games versus Zenit and Porto. This game is the perfect opportunity for the so-called whipping boys of the group to consolidate their top spot in the group, and if they do go ahead in the tournament, it will be a huge achievement. The game also gives the team a chance to become the first Cyproit club to beat a Portuguese team, and they will look to avoid a repeat of their prior encounter with Porto at their own turf, which saw the visitors register a victory.
Porto have been a perennial presence in the Champions League, and more often than not they have managed to make good progress in Europe’s elite competition. Although they are sitting at third position in the group stages, they just need to win this encounter to climb up the table, perhaps above Zenit should the Russians falter in their home game against Shakhtar. Vitor Pereira’s side can take inspiration from the fact that Porto were the last travelers to beat APOEL in their own backyard, and a repeat could very well be on the cards given the team’s European pedigree. Even without Falcao in the ranks, the Portuguese team has enough ammunition to mount an offensive assault on their less experienced opponent.
THT Prediction: APOEL 1-3 Porto
THT Players To Watch Out For: Ailton (APOEL), Hulk (Porto)
Group H ai??i?? Barcelona (Spain), AC Milan (Italy), Bate Borisov (Belarus), Viktoria PlzeA? (Czech Republic)
Bate vs Milan ai??i?? Dinamo Stadio, Nov 1 2011
Belarussian League leaders BATE Borisov are 10 points clear off the rest of the pack in the domestic circuit, but are unfortunate to be inAi?? the same group as European heavyweights Milan and Barcelona. However, there is nothing to stop them from looking for their first win of the tournament, though it will be a tough call against a rejuvenated Milan side which happens to be doing well in both club and European level. The home team have hosted two Italian teams earlier – Juventus in the Champions League and Bologna FC in UEFA Intertoto Cup – and have failed to beat the teams on both occasions. With the Europa League spot up for grabs, the onus is on BATE to get the better of PlzeA? in the group standings.
The Milan side of today has been in good nick in Italy as well as in Europe, and the team is bringing back old memories of its dominance in the yester-years. With a perfect blend of youth and experience, the Rossoneri are ready to prove their mettle in the Champions League, and their performances so far in this tournament has given them the credentials for being one of the prime contenders for the ‘big ears’. Although their forwards are yet to find their stride, the midfield has been chipping in with plenty of goals and assists, and Allegri has enough resources at his disposal to ensure the top spot after matchday four. The only concern for the Italian giants is the inavailability of Cassano, who took ill after the 3-2 win over Roma. The ex-Sampdoria striker has contributed 7 assists and 2 goals for the Il Diavolo so far this season.
THT Prediction: BATE 2-4 Milan
THT Players To Watch Out For: Kezman (BATE), Boateng (Milan)
PlzeA? vs Barcelona – Eden Stadium, Nov 1 2011
Ai??The Czech outfit are the other unfortunate team to be placed in this two-way Group, but have reasons to fight for a point to grab the third Europa League spot at the expense of BATE. However, the team’s unbeaten run on the European stage is under threat. Against a team of Barcelona’s caliber, home support means nothing and the Prague fans can only hope for a humane scoreline against the Champions. The club has never kept a clean sheet at its home turf.
Cesc puts Barcelona in a much stronger position than ever
The Catalans are expected to steamroll their less illustrious opponents, and will look to score as much as possible to make the away goals count for their position in the table. They continue their march in the La Liga, just a point behind Real and remaining unbeaten. The addition of Cesc Fabregas to the squad has only served to make the Spanish giants more threatening, and it’s safe to say that they could very well go all the way to the finals, again.
THT Prediction:Ai??Plzen 1-4 Barcelona
THT Players To Watch Out For:Ai??Marek Cech (Plzen), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona)var
