Manchester United have reportedly been heavily linked with a move for Ajax winger Antony this summer but are reconsidering their stance.
Manchester United are keen on bringing Brazilian international Antony to Old Trafford and have already had a £76 million bid rejected for him by Ajax. And according to Daily Telegraph, the Red Devils are having second thoughts about pursuing their priority target this summer.
The 22-year-old is reportedly desperate to move to the Premier League, and he has pleaded with Ajax to accept Manchester United’s offer and let him leave before the summer transfer window slams shut.
Antony had an outstanding 2021/22 season with Ajax, and he is widely regarded as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in European football right now. The Brazilian international scored 12 goals and picked up ten assists across all competitions last season, and he could prove to be a quality long-term addition for the Manchester United attack.
The Red Devils need to add more depth and quality to their attacking department, and Antony seems like an ideal fit for them. He has worked with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag during their time together in Amsterdam and should be able to fit into the Manchester United setup seamlessly and make an immediate impact.
Furthermore, the 22-year-old is far from his peak and is likely to improve further with game time and coaching. Playing alongside better players at Manchester United will only accelerate Antony’s development and help him fulfil his world-class potential.
However, the report from Daily Telegraph adds that Manchester United are prepared to consider other options if Ajax continue to play hardball regarding the transfer. PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to switch their attention to other options now that a move for Antony is proving to be difficult.
The Brazilian is currently training away from the Ajax squad in hope that he will be allowed to leave the club. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming days and whether Manchester United are prepared to put all their eggs in one basket and wait for Antony until the end of the window.
