Chelsea have set their sights on AC Milan star Theo Hernandez as Thomas Tuchel continues his search for a left-back.
According to Calciomercato, Theo Hernandez has emerged as the latest target for Chelsea. The reigning European champions are in the market for a new left-back in January, with Thomas Tuchel keen on finding a cover for Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea have already been linked with a handful of talented full-backs across Europe, including Nicolas Tagliafico and Sergino Dest. However, it appears Tuchel fancies a much more eye-catching target in the form of Hernandez. The Milan star is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs in Europe, having enjoyed immense success since his move from Real Madrid in 2019.
During his ongoing two and a half years at San Siro, Hernandez has featured in over 100 competitive games for Milan. His pace, athleticism and ability to create chances from wider areas have played a vital role in helping the Rossoneri restore the club’s lost glory under the leadership of Stefano Pioli.
The 24-year-old’s impressive performances notably earned him his first cap for the French national team back in September. Even the head coach Didier Deschamps has publicly acknowledged the Milan defender as a viable option for his team going forward.
Hernandez’s success has not gone unnoticed either, with Chelsea considering him as an ideal cover for Chilwell. The English international is set to undergo a knee surgery that effectively rules him out for the rest of the season, leaving Tuchel devoid of reliable alternatives in the left-back slot.
Marcos Alonso has been used as the primary deputy for the injured Chilwell. But the Spaniard isn’t the most consistent player in the Premier League and has been linked with a return to Serie A amid interest from Napoli. It has left Tuchel desperate for a new face at left-back, with Theo Hernandez emerging as an ideal option. The Blues are already believed to have spoken to his agent to explore the possibility of a move.
However, the report suggests Milan have no intention of parting ways with their star player anytime soon. In fact, they are working on extending the defender’s contract until 2026 and may not entertain any offers unless they exceed €60 million – a figure too steep for Chelsea at the moment.
As a result, the Blues have now set their sights on Hernandez’s compatriot Lucas Digne. The Everton defender has fallen out with coach Rafa Benitez and is expected to leave Goodison Park in January. The player himself is keen on joining the camp at Cobham, so it could only be a matter of time before the deal is finalised.
