Transfer News: Barcelona remain keen on signing Bernardo Silva

Barcelona are weighing up the possibility of snapping up Bernardo Silva from Manchester City late in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by French outlet Le 10 Sport, Barcelona are yet to call off their pursuit of Bernardo Silva. The Catalan outfit are still pondering the possibility of swooping the 27-year-old Portuguese playmaker away from Manchester City before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Bernardo Silva has been with Manchester City since the summer of 2017, having arrived at the Etihad on the back of a stunning 2016/17 campaign with AS Monaco. Since then, though, the player has blown hot and cold quite a bit and has struggled to nail down a spot for himself as a regular.

To date, the 27-year-old has notched up 203 appearances for Manchester City while chipping in with 35 goals and 44 assists along the way. However, the arrival of Jack Grealish has adversely affected his stature at the Premier League club, with the player himself ready to call it quits at the Etihad. Such a situation has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona hold a long-standing interest in Silva, having attempted to snap him up back in 2017 before he joined Manchester City instead. That interest had since dissipated for a while before they once again reignited their pursuit of the Portuguese international this summer, with the player himself pushing for a switch to Camp Nou.

The interest in Silva makes sense as well, considering Miralem Pjanic is surplus to requirements while Ilaix Moriba does not seem to have much of a future at the club amid a standoff over the terms of a renewal. As a result, the 27-year-old is a viable target for Barcelona, with his presence possibly taking some of the burden off of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Pedri.

That Silva can also operate higher up the pitch from the right flank is an added bonus, which only seeks to make him a more appealing prospect for Barcelona. And with Pep Guardiola confirming that the Portuguese playmaker has asked for a summer exit, Barcelona do have the motivation to make their move for him.

However, with his current Manchester City deal still having nearly four years left to run out, his price tag could well be out of Barcelona’s reach. Nevertheless, the Blaugrana appear to be weighing up a swoop of the 27-year-old and it remains to be seen is a late switch sees the light of the day.
