Chelsea have moved one step closer to the potential transfer of Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz this summer.
According to The Guardian, Chelsea’s hopes of securing the services of Kai Havertz have been given a huge boost. It is believed that negotiations between them and Bayer Leverkusen are moving swiftly, especially following a productive meeting on Wednesday.
The Blues’ had initially submitted €65 million, plus add-ons, bid for Havertz, which didn’t meet Leverkusen’s astounding €100 million valuation. But, it seems the two clubs could finally arrive at a compromise, especially with the player himself keen on moving to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Havertz throughout the ongoing summer transfer window. He had emerged as the main contender after Bayern Munich settled for Leroy Sane while other candidates like Manchester United have not been willing to meet Leverkusen’s outrageous asking fee.
The west London giants, however, have bigger plans, it seems. They have already secured the services of high-profile attackers like Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. And Havertz, in that regard, could be the next piece of the jigsaw in Frank Lampard’s revolution at Stamford Bridge.
The German international could indeed be an ideal addition to the side. His creativity and direct style of play should bode well for the club, especially following the departures of Pedro and Willian, who joined rivals Arsenal on a free transfer.
It is also fair to consider the fact that both Havertz and Werner play together for the German national team, meaning they have already played alongside each other. And they can only hope to replicate those performances for Chelsea next season.
For Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, the sale of Havertz could serve as a massive blow. But on the flip side, it could help them fund moves for top targets including Norwich City’s Max Aarons. They also need a new striker – someone who can prove to be an upgrade over Lucas Alario and Kevin Volland.
In the meantime, Chelsea are constantly being criticised for not looking after their defensive department. Their recent defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich highlighted a lot of problems at the club that needs fixing.
Thiago Silva has emerged as the latest option for the Chelsea side but the Blues need to make more defensive additions to the squad if they are to truly compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool next season.
