Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez increasingly likely to leave Liverpool next year

Liverpool’s long-serving defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez look all set to leave the club next summer.

Liverpool could end up losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez next summer when their contracts expire in June 2027, as reported by Football Insider, with the club yet to open talks on extensions.

While Van Dijk could still agree to an extension during the current season, his long-term future remains uncertain for now. Meanwhile, Gomez might not get a new deal because of his status in the squad under Andoni Iraola and his recent injury concerns.

Will Virgil van Dijk get a new deal at Liverpool?

Virgil van Dijk remains a key figure in Liverpool’s defence, and he has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players since arriving from Southampton in January 2018. The Dutchman, now 35, has helped the Reds reach the top of Europe as well as English football and is approaching the 400-appearance milestone.

With his current contract running until next summer, Liverpool must decide whether to extend the stay of their captain or begin planning for a future without him. Losing van Dijk would represent a significant challenge for the club, given his leadership, consistency and contribution to their recent success.

The Dutch international is reportedly attracting interest from Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, who are pushing for Van Dijk, believing the experienced centre-back could bring greater defensive solidity.

He could become available for a free transfer if he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season. The Dutchman is likely to have several options if he decides to leave Anfield, making his next career move an intriguing prospect.

Joe Gomez could follow his skipper on the way out

Joe Gomez’s situation is similarly uncertain. The 29-year-old joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and is currently the club’s longest-serving player. His versatility has made him a valuable squad member, with the Englishman capable of operating across the defensive line.

However, persistent injury problems have disrupted his career, limiting his opportunities to establish himself as a regular starter. Gomez has made just five appearances (102 minutes in total) since the start of the current campaign, with his only start coming in the Carabao Cup.

The versatile English defender’s lack of regular minutes could strengthen the case for a fresh challenge elsewhere, particularly if Liverpool decide against offering him a new contract. Both players’ contracts expire in June 2027; Liverpool’s silence on new deals suggests negotiations are not imminent.
