Liverpool overtake Barcelona in Marcos Senesi chase

Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi is reportedly increasingly likely to join Liverpool in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window amid his links with Barcelona.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona and Liverpool are interested in Marcos Senesi. The two European heavyweights are keen on reinforcing their defensive units by signing a centre-back this summer and have set their sights on 28-year-old Bournemouth defender.

Widespread reports have also linked the South American defender with Juventus, with the Serie A giants pushing hard to secure his services. However, Senesi’s other suitors have fallen behind Liverpool in the battle for his signature.

How has Marcos Senesi fared at Bournemouth?

Marcos Senesi has established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in the Premier League since joining Bournemouth from Feyenoord in August 2022. The Concordia native rose in prominence after arriving in Europe, enjoying an excellent spell with the Eredivisie outfit before moving to England nearly four years ago.

The Argentine international has forged a solid central defensive partnership with Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, and James Hill during his spell with Bournemouth. Senesi has made over 100 appearances for Bournemouth thus far, chipping in with six goals and ten assists. However, he faces an uncertain future after entering the final six months of his contract, and the situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona and Liverpool.

A man in demand

Barcelona’s interest in Marcos Senesi makes sense. Andreas Christensen faces an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou, and he has become an unreliable player for the Blaugrana due to his relentless fitness issues. Additionally, Ronald Araujo has been inconsistent in recent seasons, becoming a liability for Barcelona. So, Senesi is an option worth considering.

As for Liverpool, the Reds need a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, who has entered the twilight of his career. Additionally, Joe Gomez may leave Liverpool this summer amid his struggles for regular game time at Anfield. So, the Merseyside outfit must sign a new centre-back, even though Jeremy Jacquet will arrive from Stade Rennais in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, recent reports have claimed that Senesi is on the cusp of joining. However, with the North London club struggling in the relegation battle in the Premier League, moving to Liverpool may be a more sensible decision, as the 28-year-old Argentine international can offer him UEFA Champions League football.
