PSG stepping up interest in Frenkie de Jong, line up opening bid

Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly look to sign 28-year-old Dutch playmaker Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona playmaker Frenkie de Jong is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League holders are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile playmaker in the coming months.

The latest report has revealed that the French giants are ready to submit a bid worth €55 million to sign the Dutchman from Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window. However, the Blaugrana will demand around €70 million to part ways with de Jong.

How has Frenkie de Jong fared at Barcelona so far?

Frenkie de Jong has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. While the 28-year-old has been among the most reliable performers for Barcelona in the last half a dozen years, he has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons.

The Dutch playmaker has made nearly 300 appearances thus far for Barcelona while chipping in with 20 goals and 30 assists. Meanwhile, de Jong’s progress since joining Barcelona has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs. Paris Saint-Germain will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature this year.

Ligue 1 adventure beckons?

Frenkie de Jong has been on PSG’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is surprising, considering Luis Enrique has a stacked midfield unit. Even if the Ligue 1 champions part ways with Fabian Ruiz this summer, Joao Neves, Warren Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, and Dro Fernandez can be long-term assets in the middle of the park.

So, it is unclear how de Jong will fit into the scheme of things at PSG, and the 28-year-old Dutchman may become a liability if his fitness issues continue. Nevertheless, the Barcelona midfield metronome is a top target for PSG, with Les Parisiens ready to offer €55 million to secure his services.

However, with Barcelona demanding a hefty price to sell the Netherlands international, a summer move will not be straightforward. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s valuation is understandable, as de Jong’s contract will expire in three years, and the Dutch midfielder is at the peak of his powers. However, it is unclear if PSG will pay €70 million to sign him this summer.
