Newcastle United considering Diego Aguado swoop

Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 19-year-old Spanish defensive sensation Diego Aguado from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid wonderkid Diego Aguado is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a promising young centre-back ahead of the 2026/27 season.

However, the Tyneside outfit will not be alone in the battle for the Spaniard’s signature, as AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and Parma Calcio are also keen on signing him in the upcoming transfer window. Meanwhile, it is unclear if the youngster will leave in the coming months, with the upcoming matchdays crucial in determining his future.

Who is Diego Aguado?

Diego Aguado is the latest promising prospect to rise in prominence in his homeland. Born in Madrid, the 19-year-old has spent his formative years thus far in Spain, rising through the ranks at Real Madrid. The teenage sensation has already broken into the first-team squad at the Santiago Bernabeu, making two appearances for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid’s injury crisis this season has given Aguado some exposure, even though regular game time for the first team has eluded him. Nevertheless, a solid end to the 2025/26 season may be on the cards, with Alvaro Arbeloa rating him highly. However, the Spanish defender’s stock has soared, with Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Will Aguado trade Madrid for Newcastle?

Newcastle United’s interest in Diego Aguado is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a promising young centre-back who can take over as the undisputed first-choice central defender in a season or two. With Fabian Schar and Dan Burn on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of their careers, Newcastle United must plan for life after the ageing duo.

Several candidates, including Karim Coulibaly, have thus emerged on Newcastle United’s wishlist, with Aguado also a viable target. The 19-year-old Spaniard, like Coulibaly, is a teenage prospect with the potential to become a world-class centre-back.

However, prising Aguado away from Real Madrid may be a tall order, as staying at the Bernabeu beyond the 2025/26 season is possible. Additionally, the Merengues tend to include buyback clauses in the deals to sell their prospects. So, Newcastle United will not have control over the Spanish prodigy’s long-term future, making Coulibaly a more attractive target.
