Liverpool and Newcastle United are reportedly ramping up their efforts to sign 28-year-old Colombian international Luis Suarez from Sporting CP.
According to a report by Correio da Manha, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in 28-year-old Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez. The two Premier League clubs are keen on reinforcing their offensive units by signing a striker in the upcoming transfer window.
The latest report has revealed that Liverpool and Newcastle United are intensifying their efforts and “fighting tooth and nail” to sign the South American attacker in the coming months. Meanwhile, Suarez has a release clause worth €80 million in his contract with Sporting CP.
How has Luis Suarez performed for Sporting CP?
Luis Suarez has seen his stock skyrocket since joining Sporting CP from UD Almeria last summer. The 28-year-old went under the radar in his formative years and most of his professional career. However, he has left no stone unturned since arriving at the Portuguese club, becoming one of the world’s most prolific strikers.
The Colombian international has scored 33 goals and provided seven assists in 42 appearances across all competitions thus far in the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, Suarez’s exploits for Sporting CP have stimulated the interest of several high-profile clubs. Liverpool and Newcastle United are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Liverpool’s interest in Luis Suarez is perplexing. The Merseyside club signed Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak last summer, and they do not need another centre-forward, particularly someone who cannot reprise another role. So, it is surprising that the report has mentioned that Liverpool will enter a “full-scale tug-of-war” to secure Suarez’s services this summer.
As for Newcastle United, the Tyneside outfit also signed two strikers last summer. However, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have failed to make their mark in the 2025/26 season, while recent reports have linked the former with a summer move away from St. James’ Park. So, it behoves Newcastle United to dip into the market for a prolific striker, with Suarez being a viable target.
However, it is unclear if Newcastle United will have the financial bandwidth to afford a deal worth €80 million to sign the 28-year-old Colombian international from Sporting CP after Eddie Howe’s recent comments. However, the Primeira Liga champions have previously shown the willingness to negotiate transfer fees lower than players’ release clauses, and the two Premier League clubs will hope that happens.
