Chelsea and Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing 18-year-old German youth international Karim Coulibaly from Bundesliga club Werder Bremen this year.
According to a report by German outlet BILD, Chelsea and Newcastle United are interested in Karim Coulibaly. The two Premier League clubs are keen on bolstering their defensive units by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window, and they have set their sights on the 18-year-old Werder Bremen wonderkid.
However, Chelsea and Newcastle United will face stiff competition from Napoli and Marseille for his signature in the coming months. Meanwhile, the report has suggested that “talks are already said to be taking place” for a summer move for the Werder Bremen defensive sensation, with the Bundesliga club demanding around €45 million to part ways with him.
Karim Coulibaly has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Bundesliga since breaking into the first-team squad at Werder Bremen. Born in Oldenburg, the teenage sensation has spent his formative years in Germany, passing through the academies at Bramfelder SV, HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst, and Hamburger SV before graduating from the youth division at Werder Bremen.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed his breakthrough at Werder Bremen this season, making 22 Bundesliga appearances thus far and amassing over 1,500 minutes of game time. Meanwhile, Coulibaly’s progress alerted several high-profile clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Chelsea’s interest in Karim Coulibaly is understandable. The Blues are scouring the market for a promising centre-back, as they want a long-term central defensive partner for Levi Colwill. Additionally, a defensive overhaul is on the cards, as Axel Disasi has no future at Stamford Bridge, and recent reports have linked Benoit Badiashile with a move away from the West London club.
As for Newcastle United, the Magpies are looking for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window, as Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of their careers. Additionally, Sven Botman has struggled with fitness issues in the last 18 months. So, Newcastle United must sign a centre-back in the coming months, with Coulibaly emerging as a viable target.
Meanwhile, Chelsea and Newcastle United are not alone in the battle for Coulibaly’s signature, as Napoli and Marseille are also interested in the 18-year-old German centre-back. Additionally, recent reports have linked the Werder Bremen whizkid with Arsenal.
Meanwhile, the Bundesliga club will demand around €45 million to sell the youngster. The price tag is high for an unproven centre-back, but Werder Bremen can justify the valuation with his potential and ceiling. However, it is unclear if his suitors will pay €45 million to sign the teenage prospect ahead of the 2026/27 season.
