Chelsea, Tottenham in transfer tussle to sign Maximiliano Araujo

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to battle it out for the signature of Sporting CP full-back Maximiliano Araujo.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have started making plans for the upcoming summer transfer window. Both London clubs are looking to bolster their backline with a new full-back, and according to Record via Sport Witness, the Blues and Spurs are keen on acquiring the services of Maximiliano Araujo, who has been doing wonders for Sporting CP.

The Uruguay international’s impressive performances have placed him on the radar of multiple top clubs. Chelsea and Tottenham are two of those clubs. The Premier League giants look set to battle for the signature of the 26-year-old.

Maximiliano Araujo has only gone from strength to strength since joining Sporting CP from Toluca in the summer of 2024. The player had an impressive debut campaign in Portugal, and he has backed it up with another stellar campaign.

The South American left-back has been involved in 35 games this term, and he has even contributed towards 10 goals. He has played a big part in their impressive run in the UEFA Champions League, as they have made it to the quarter-finals.

Araujo prefers playing as a left-back, but he is comfortable enough to feature in any role on the left flank and can even be used in midfield when needed. He is equally effective on both ends of the pitch, and his versatility is another major reason why top clubs are after him.

Chelsea and Tottenham are ready to battle for Araujo

Chelsea and Tottenham have emerged as two of the most serious suitors for Maximiliano Araujo. They are reportedly crazy for the Uruguay international. Given his heroics in the Champions League, the interest in his services has skyrocketed. Both London clubs have sent scouts to Portugal to watch him in action, as they plot a raid on Sporting.

The Blues signed Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting CP last year. They have an excellent relationship with the Portuguese club, which could help their cause. While both Tottenham and Chelsea have collected positive reports about him, it will be interesting to see if that’s enough for them to go ahead and sign him.

Meanwhile, Sporting are keen to secure his long-term future with a new deal and are prepared to offer a significant pay rise on his current €650,000–700,000 per year salary. With his existing contract including an €80 million release clause, it will be interesting to see whether that figure changes if a new agreement is reached.
