Arne Slot’s Liverpool are interested in signing Atletico Madrid defensive sensation Marc Pubill to replace Ibrahima Konate.
Having added a lot of quality to their attack and midfield in recent windows, Liverpool are now looking to reinforce their backline ahead of next season. They are expected to be in the market for multiple centre-backs.
According to a report from Fichajes, the Merseyside club are keen on signing Marc Pubill. They consider the Atletico Madrid sensation an ideal replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who looks set to leave the club as a free agent after the end of the season.
Konate’s contract is running out, and despite all the efforts, Liverpool haven’t been able to convince him to pen a new deal. While they haven’t given up just yet, recent reports suggest he has already mentally closed his chapter at Anfield and is ready to take on a new challenge.
Marc Pubill’s sensational rise at Atletico
With the French international set to leave the club, the Reds want to bring in a world-class defender to fill the void. They do have quite a few names on their wishlist, but it seems Atletico’s Marc Pubill is their top target for the summer.
After making a name for himself at UD Almeria, Pubill made the move to the Madrid-based club last summer. He has only gone from strength to strength since and has featured in 23 games for Diego Simeone’s team. While he prefers playing as a right-back, the Argentine manager has transformed the 22-year-old into a world-class centre-back.
Liverpool might struggle to strike a deal
While Pubill has a long-term contract at Atletico, Liverpool seem willing to prise him away. They want someone who can help them in the short as well as the long run, and the Spanish youth international seems to be a perfect fit for their project.
The youngster has everything needed to succeed in the English top flight, but striking a deal with Atletico won’t be easy. The Reds are willing to fork out a massive fee, but it will be interesting to see if that will be enough for the Spanish club to sell one of their brightest prospects.
