Julian Alvarez not keen on Manchester City return

Atletico Madrid star forward Julian Alvarez has no intentions of securing a return to Manchester City.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Manchester City have suffered a massive blow in their attempts to bring Julian Alvarez back to the club, as the Argentine World Cup winner has no intentions of returning. He doesn’t intend on being stuck behind Erling Haaland in their attacking pecking order again.

Alvarez had an impressive rise at River Plate, and on the back of it, Manchester City secured his services back in 2022. He had an incredible two-year-long stint at the club. While his numbers were exceptional, he still wasn’t a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, with Haaland being the preferred choice up top.

He ended up leaving the club to join Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 in search of a more prominent role. The move has certainly worked out in his favour, as he has established himself as the leader of their attack under Diego Simeone.

The 26-year-old forward has been involved in 35 matches across competitions and has contributed towards 19 goals in the ongoing campaign. While he remains one of the first names on their team sheet and still has over four years left on his deal, Alvarez has been constantly linked with a move away from the club.

A return to Manchester City is off the cards

While he could look to make a move away from the Spanish capital this summer, a return to Manchester City is highly unlikely, with Haaland still at the club. Apart from the game time, the Argentine wasn’t too pleased with the weather in Manchester as well.

While speaking about Alavrez’s position on a potential return to City, O’Rourke said, “I would say it’s probably very highly unlikely (that he moves back to Man City).

“I’m sure City possibly would look at it because he’s such a top player, Julian Alvarez, he’s really impressed at Atletico Madrid, but one of the main reasons he left City to join Atletico was that he wanted regular first-team football.

“He wasn’t getting that at Man City, with the likes of Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and everybody else ahead of him in the pecking order.

“I don’t think he would want to come back and find himself playing a fringe role again.

“He wasn’t too happy with the weather in Manchester either, (that) was another key reason for him moving away to the Spanish capital.”

Alvarez has been linked with quite a few top clubs, and Arsenal are one of them. While a move to North London can’t be ruled out, he certainly doesn’t seem keen on returning to Manchester. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have no intentions of letting him leave and will do everything in their power to ensure he continues at the club.
