Tottenham could face a battle to keep hold of Lucas Bergvall next summer, after turning down approaches from Aston Villa and Chelsea in January.
Lucas Bergvall hasn’t looked back since joining Tottenham. He became an integral part of their first team in no time and played a massive part in their Europa League triumph under Ange Postecoglou. The Swedish international was named the club’s player of the year in his very first season.
He has carried that form into the new season, and his impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed. Rival clubs are ready to try and prise him away from Spurs. According to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham could struggle to keep hold of him for long after having turned down approaches from Villa and Chelsea during the recently concluded winter window.
On the back of his impressive performances for Djurgarden, Spurs acquired his services in the summer of 2024. They invested in the young Swedish sensation with an eye on the future. However, things have turned out much better than they had expected.
At just 20, he is already an integral part of their first team. Last season, he racked up over 2,300 minutes in his 45 outings. Despite a few injury concerns, he has still racked up close to 1,300 minutes in 26 outings so far this season.
While he prefers playing as a central midfielder, Bergvall is comfortable enough to feature in any role in the centre of the park. If needed, he can even feature on the flanks. His ability to control the tempo of the game and the maturity that he has shown have pleased one and all.
Spurs don’t intend to sell Bergvall
Spurs are absolutely delighted with the 20-year-old’s performances, and they have no intentions of losing him anytime soon. With his contract running until 2031, the North London club are in complete control of his future. However, rival clubs could still make life difficult for them next summer.
Since he wasn’t a regular feature under Thomas Frank, Chelsea and Aston Villa tried to make the most out of that situation during the winter window. Both clubs are long-term admirers of the Swedish international, and they approached Spurs regarding a transfer.
However, Tottenham turned down their approach, as they have no intentions of negotiating his departure anytime soon. Igor Tudor is expected to take charge as their new boss, and it will be interesting to see what kind of role Bergvall has under him after he returns from his ankle injury.
