AS Monaco blocked Maghnes Akliouche exit in January

Tottenham Hotspur could not sign 23-year-old French international Maghnes Akliouche in the winter transfer window, as Ligue 1 club AS Monaco blocked his departure.

According to a report by Football Insider, Maghnes Akliouche has been the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites were keen on bolstering their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker in the winter transfer window. So, the 23-year-old AS Monaco playmaker emerged as a target for the North London outfit.

The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners mulled over a last-gasp move for the Frenchman heading into the final week of the winter transfer window. However, AS Monaco blocked Akliouche’s departure, as the Ligue 1 giants were unwilling to cash in on him midway through the 2025/26 season.

How has Maghnes Akliouche fared in his career so far?

Maghnes Akliouche has established himself as one of the best young prospects in Ligue 1 since breaking into the first-team squad at AS Monaco. Born in Tremblay-en-France, the 23-year-old spent his formative years in France and graduated from the youth division at AS Monaco. The youngster has not looked back since enjoying his breakthrough in the 2023/24 campaign.

Akliouche has made over 100 appearances for AS Monaco thus far while chipping in with 20 goals and 22 assists. Meanwhile, the French playmaker’s progress has not gone unnoticed, helping him break into his national side while capturing the attention of European bigwigs. Premier League outfits, in particular, have been keen on signing him, with Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the winter transfer window.

London calling? Not quite.

Maghnes Akliouche has been on Tottenham Hotspur’s wishlist for a long time. The North London club also mulled over signing the AS Monaco prospect in the summer transfer window, but the deal did not materialise. The continued interest has been understandable, as the Lilywhites have been eager to bolster their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker.

Having failed to fill Son Heung-min’s void last summer, Tottenham wanted to do it by securing Akliouche’s services after scouting him this season. The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners even contemplated a last-ditch move for the AS Monaco winger for the final days of the winter transfer window.

However, the Ligue 1 giants were unwilling to part ways with Akliouche midway through the 2025/26 season. While several versatile attackers have emerged on Tottenham’s wishlist, Akliouche was a top target for the North London club. It will be interesting to see if they return with a bid for the 23-year-old French international in the summer transfer window.
