Jean-Philippe increasingly likely to stay at Crystal Palace

Jean-Philippe Mateta is reportedly expected to stay put at Crystal Palace as AC Milan collapses.

Jean-Philippe Mateta looks set to remain at Crystal Palace after his much-anticipated move to AC Milan collapsed at the final hurdle. According to talkSPORT, what had appeared to be a straightforward deal, with the striker keen on the switch and personal terms already agreed, has now been formally called off, bringing an abrupt end to weeks of speculation.

The decisive turning point came during the medical stage of the transfer. As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X, a series of medical checks conducted on Thursday prompted Milan to withdraw from the agreement. Palace have since been informed that the move is no longer progressing, effectively closing the door on Mateta’s hoped-for relocation to Italy.

For the 28-year-old Frenchman, it is a frustrating outcome. A move to Milan, and the opportunity to lead the line at San Siro, represented a significant step in his career, particularly with an eye on maintaining his standing at international level. Instead, the Crystal Palace striker must now quickly refocus on his responsibilities in South London, where he remains a key attacking figure for the South London club.

From Crystal Palace’s perspective, the collapse of the deal brings clarity at a critical point in the season. Losing Mateta without a guaranteed replacement would have left Oliver Glasner short of proven attacking options, especially given the club’s ongoing push for stability in the league. Retaining him avoids a late-window scramble and preserves continuity in a side that relies heavily on his physical presence and hold-up play.

In truth, this outcome may yet suit all parties better than initially expected. For Milan, medical red flags are not a risk worth gambling on, particularly when planning for a title push and Champions League return.

For Crystal Palace, keeping Mateta could prove invaluable in the weeks ahead, offering goals, experience, and tactical balance. As for the player himself, while disappointment is inevitable, a strong second half of the season in the Premier League may reopen doors in the summer, perhaps even on more favourable terms.
