Stade Rennais are eager to keep hold of Jeremy Jacquet for the remainder of the season, thus dealing a blow to top suitors.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Stade Rennais are unwilling to sell Jeremy Jacquet this month, with a deal in the summer still a strong possibility. The decision from the Ligue 1 side could come as a blow to the likes of Chelsea in particular, who were keen to wrap up the deal this month, as well as Liverpool, who remain on his trail.

Jeremy Jacquet’s name appeared a few months ago when Arsenal were linked with a move for the promising French defender. In the aftermath of the speculation, the young centre-back has fallen on the radars of multiple other clubs, such as Chelsea and Liverpool, among others.

Jacquet has already shown plenty of promise with his performances for Stade Rennais, which has increased speculation surrounding his future in the last few days. Chelsea have been eager to wrap up a move this month, having stepped up their interest with the idea of signing a new centre-back.

The 20-year-old Ligue 1 defensive sensation fits properly into their plans to sign a player with a massive ceiling as well as scope for development into a top star. Chelsea held extensive talks with Rennais, who reported wanted a record fee of €65-70 million as per Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea were only willing to fork out around €40-50 million for the player, which may fall well short of Rennais’ valuation. The Blues had earmarked Marco Senesi as an alternative to Jacquet, but they would still like to seal a move for the 20-year-old Ligue 1 defensive sensation.

Stade Rennais to keep Jeremy Jacquet?

Chelsea are not alone in the mix, as Liverpool are also interested. The Reds are eager to continue their drive to sign young stars for the present and future, as Jacquet fits into their long-term thinking for the defensive setup. However, both clubs have now been dealt a big blow in the pursuit of the 20-year-old Ligue 1 defensive sensation, with Stade Rennais indicating that they are keen to keep Jacquet.

Rennais are planning on keeping Jacquet at least until the summer, as he is key to their plans. However, there’s a possibility of a pre-agreement with the French side, as they might open the doors to negotiate a deal now and to be executed in the summer. This could be the way forward for teams like Chelsea and Liverpool in pursuit of the 20-year-old Ligue 1 defensive sensation.
