Chelsea step up move to beat Arsenal, Real Madrid to Jeremy Jacquet

Chelsea are ready to accelerate the pursuit of defensive target Jeremy Jacquet this month and beat Arsenal and Real Madrid to his signature.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Chelsea are ready to push hard in their efforts to land Jeremy Jacquet ahead of rivals Arsenal and Real Madrid. The Blues are in the market for a new centre-back, and remain underwhelmed by Rennes’ asking price.

The big argument around Chelsea’s transfer business last summer centred around the fact that they should have signed a new centre-back following Levi Colwill’s season-ending ACL injury. The club failed to address the issue and decided to go ahead with their existing options, including he injury-prone Wesley Fofana.

The bigger argument centred around the idea that a centre-back arrival in the summer could have potentially pushed the club into a title challenge. Chelsea are currently far away from such a prospect, and there are doubts about whether they can even challenge for a top-four place.

To achieve the latter, the Blues are ready to give new boss Liam Rosenior a new centre-back to achieve the objectives this season. Some names are being sounded out, but the Blues are very interested in one Jeremy Jacquet, who is also on the radars of the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Both those clubs have considered making moves next summer, as he is seen as a big prospect for the future. Arsenal were seen as a top contender around last summer, but after that, the 20-year-old centre-back signed a new deal with Rennes, which could see the Ligue 1 side demand a significant fee when they happen to sell the defender, with the report stating figures upwards of €60 million.

Chelsea ready to accelerate Jeremy Jacquet’s pursuit?

Chelsea have been making their way into the driver’s seat for Jacquet, and some reports even stated they had agreed on personal terms with the €60 million-rated defensive sensation. Whether that is the case remains to be seen, but Chelsea are now pushing to get a deal done with Rennes and are undeterred by their asking price.

Signing Jeremy Jacquet would also fit into their idea of a defender, with the €60 million-rated Frenchman being very young and having a big upside value in the future. It remains to be seen whether the push from the Blues would bring Real Madrid and Arsenal back to the table for the defender.
