EFL Championship leaders Coventry City are reportedly set to sign 20-year-old English winger Romain Esse on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of the 2025/26 season.
According to a report by Sky Sports journalist James Savundra, Romain Esse has been the subject of interest from Coventry City. The EFL Championship table-toppers have been eager to bolster their offensive unit by signing a wide attacker in the winter transfer window. So, the 20-year-old Crystal Palace winger emerged as a target for the second-division club.
The Premier League promotion hopefuls have now secured an agreement to sign the Englishman on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season. Esse is now “expected to join Frank Lampard’s side this month as they bid to arrest their recent slump” in the second half of the 2025/26 season.
Who is Romain Esse?
Romain Esse has endured a patient wait since joining Crystal Palace from Millwall in January 2025. Born in London, the young winger spent his formative years in his home city and graduated from the youth division at Millwall FC. However, while the 20-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with the Championship club, he has not been a regular for Crystal Palace.
The English youth international has managed only 223 minutes of game time across eight outings thus far in the 2025/26 season for Crystal Palace. However, Esse’s stock remains high, and a return to the EFL Championship is on the cards for him. The youngster’s next destination will be Coventry City, with the Sky Blues set to secure his services on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season.
From Premier League to Championship soon
Coventry City’s interest in Romain Esse has been understandable. The Premier League promotion hopefuls have been scouring the market for a wide attacker heading into the winter transfer window. With Frank Lampard’s men sitting on top of the EFL Championship standings, promotion to the Premier League is possible. However, they have slipped up in recent weeks after winning only two of their last eight games.
So, Lampard wants Coventry City to bolster his squad’s offensive unit while retaining his best players for the second half of the 2025/26 season. The latest report has brought good news for Coventry City, as the 20-year-old Englishman is on the verge of arriving on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of the 2025/26 season.
While other EFL Championship clubs were also keen on signing Esse from Crystal Palace, the youngster is on the verge of moving to Coventry City. It will be interesting to see if the English winger resurrects his fortunes and helps the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League.
