Manchester City optimistic of winning race to sign Elliot Anderson

Manchester City and Manchester United are interested in signing 23-year-old English international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest next summer.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Elliot Anderson is the subject of interest of Manchester City. The Citizens are eager to reinforce their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder next summer. So, the 23-year-old Nottingham Forest mainstay has emerged as a target for them.

The Englishman is also a target for Manchester United, with the Red Devils pushing hard for his signature. However, their neighbours “hold the sporting edge over their rivals right now and there are indications they will look to position themselves early for talks capable of turning the player’s head” in the coming months.

Elliot Anderson and his meteoric rise

Elliot Anderson has established himself as one of the most reliable midfielders in the Premier League since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in a deal worth £35 million in July 2024. The 23-year-old spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Newcastle United.

However, Newcastle United’s PSR woes forced the Tyneside club to sell Anderson to Nottingham Forest. Anderson has made over 50 appearances for Nottingham Forest thus far while chipping in with three goals and seven assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Manchester United’s interest in Elliot Anderson makes sense. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a holding midfielder, as Casemiro is approaching the twilight of his career. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has failed to make his mark since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain 18 months ago. So, Anderson has emerged as a viable target for Manchester United.

As for Manchester City, Rodri’s long-term future is uncertain, and the Spanish international has struggled with fitness issues in the last 18 months. So, Manchester City must plan for life after Rodri, with Anderson being a top target. The latest report has revealed that the Citizens are confident about winning the battle for the 23-year-old Englishman’s signature.

While recent reports have claimed that Nottingham Forest’s asking price is prohibitive for Manchester City, they are the front-runners for the English midfielder’s signature due to “sporting edge over their rivals right now and there are indications they will look to position themselves early for talks capable of turning the player’s head” in the coming months. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United can convince him to move to Old Trafford instead.
