Leeds United best-placed to sign Ruben Vargas next year

Leeds United will reportedly compete with Aston Villa and Tottenham in the race to sign 27-year-old Swiss attacker Ruben Vargas from La Liga club Sevilla next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Orgullo Biri, Ruben Vargas is the subject of interest from Leeds United. Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on signing the Sevilla attacker next year. However, they have fallen behind their fellow Premier League club in the battle for the Swiss international’s signature, as the Whites are ready to pay €20 million to secure his services.

How has Ruben Vargas fared in La Liga?

Ruben Vargas has made considerable progress since joining Sevilla from FC Augsburg earlier this year. The 27-year-old spent his formative years in Switzerland, passing through the academies at FC Adligenswil, FC Luzern, and SC Kriens before graduating from the youth division at FC Luzern. However, the player rose in prominence during his spell with FC Augsburg before moving to La Liga.

The Swiss international has been solid thus far in the 2025/26 season, chipping in with three goals and four assists in 13 La Liga appearances. Meanwhile, Vargas’s performances have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Tottenham Hotspur will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature next year.

A man in demand

Aston Villa will dip into the market for a versatile attacker in the next two transfer windows, as Unai Emery wants more firepower in the final third. With Ollie Watkins not at his best, the Aston Villa manager needs more productivity from the other attackers. So, Vargas has emerged as a target for the West Midlands outfit.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Ruben Vargas makes sense. The Lilywhites are scouring the market for a wide attacker heading into the winter transfer window, as Richarlison faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. So, Vargas is an option worth considering for the North London club.

As for Leeds United, the Whites are the best-placed club to land the Sevilla attacker, as they are ready to submit a bid worth €20 million to secure his services. Daniel Farke wants more firepower in the final third to sustain the challenge of remaining in the Premier League beyond the 2025/26 season.

With Leeds United ready to ramp up the efforts to sign the 27-year-old Swiss international, Aston Villa and Tottenham risk falling behind in the race to secure his services. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Vargas.
