Liverpool are ready to once again break the bank as they plot a €95 million raid on Athletic Club to sign Nico Williams.
Nico Williams’ future was one of the biggest talking points throughout the last summer transfer window. He was on the verge of making the move to Barcelona, but in the end, the young winger ended up penning a new long-term deal at Athletic Club.
While he was promised a winning project at his childhood club, things haven’t gone according to plan for the La Liga outfit. Williams isn’t pleased about the situation and could end up pushing for a move in 2026. According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool have emerged as a potential destination. The Reds are very keen on his signature, and are willing to fork out €95 million to get a deal over the line.
Williams, who has come up the ranks at Athletic Club, has been a part of their first team setup since 2021. He has only gone from strength to strength since. The 23-year-old winger made quite a reputation for himself with his exceptional performances during Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024.
On the back of his consistent performances for club and country, Barcelona were keen on signing him last summer. However, Athletic Club managed to convince him to sign a new ten-year deal and raised his release clause from €58 million to €95 million.
Liverpool want Williams to replace Salah
While they did manage to secure his future, they had promised him a winning project, and as things stand, they haven’t been able to fulfil it. Williams could now push for a move to a bigger club, and Liverpool seem keen on making him a part of their project.
Despite having spent a fortune on forwards during the summer, the Merseyside club seek more quality in the final third, as they look to prepare for life without Mohamed Salah. The Reds consider Williams to be an ideal long-term replacement for the Egypt international.
They seem willing to make a €95 million offer to get a deal over the line. Arne Slot wants a reliable successor to Salah, and despite his recent struggles, they are confident that the Spanish international could become one of the mainstays of their project going forward. They have already made initial contacts as they look to learn about his potential availability.
