Girona revive interest in Claudio Echeverri chase

Relegation-threatened Girona have reignited their pursuit of Manchester City attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri.

Girona are going through a very difficult phase. The City Group-owned club are struggling to win games and find themselves in the relegation zone. In order to avoid the drop, they are looking at the winter transfer window as an opportunity to reinforce their squad.

According to a report from Cadena SER, Girona have revived their interest in Claudio Echeverri, as they believe the Argentine attacking sensation could help them. While he is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, they are working hard to ensure they can secure his services for the second half of the season.

Echeverri came up the ranks at River Plate and made quite a name for himself while playing for their first team. While clubs from across Europe were keen on his signature, City won the race for his signature when they struck a £12.5 million deal with the South American club at the start of 2024.

He stayed back at River Plate on loan before joining the Premier League giants at the end of 2024. Since Pep Guardiola wasn’t certain about handing him regular minutes, they ended up sending him out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen for the ongoing campaign.

The move hasn’t really worked out in favour of the 19-year-old. While he has been involved in 11 matches, he has only racked up 270 minutes of first-team action, with just three starts so far. The player is frustrated by the lack of game time.

Echeverri could be on the move again in January

Meanwhile, City are also not pleased with his situation and are looking to recall him mid-season. Girona seem keen on making the most out of this situation. They seem to have already held talks with sister club City. Since they have the right to terminate his loan spell, a move to the Spanish club is very much possible.

Girona would absolutely love to have the Argentine youth international in their ranks as they look to survive the drop. His ability to feature anywhere in attack could come in very handy. Not only will he add creativity, but he could also provide something different to what they already have to offer in the final third.

Michel could give him regular opportunities at Girona, which could help him develop as a player. A loan move to the La Liga club could actually be in the best interest of all parties involved. However, the Spanish outfit will have to make room for him by sacrificing one of their three non-EU players, Jhon Solis, Yaser Asprilla and Vitor Reis.
