Chelsea abandon Mike Maignan chase, AC Milan contract talks continue

Chelsea have reportedly cooled their interest in Mike Maignan, while AC Milan are not giving up on a contract renewal of their skipper.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Mike Maignan’s future beyond the season remains undecided as Chelsea have cooled their interest. The 30-year-old keeper is set to be a free agent in the summer, as AC Milan are not giving up on their hopes of renewing their skipper’s deal at the San Siro.

Chelsea have reportedly withdrawn from their pursuit of Mike Maignan despite chasing the goalkeeper since the start of the summer window. The Blues had targeted a move for the France international during the small window that was opened for the teams participating in the Club World Cup.

At the time, Chelsea and AC Milan could not agree on a fee, although Maignan was open to the switch. The Blues persisted with Robert Sanchez since, and despite expectations that they may return for the France international in the latter part of the summer window, the pursuit never took off.

Given the veracity of numerous reports, Chelsea have been reportedly angling for a move for some time during the last few months, and Maignan was keen to make the switch, mostly on a Bosman deal next summer. However, it appears the Blues have cooled their interest, with the reasons for the same unknown.

There are many more clubs in the mix for Maingan, as he could still have a big choice to make when the summer window opens. Various reports had suggested he was ready to leave AC Milan, but the Rossoneri are persisting with their efforts to renew his deal, as rivals Juventus are also keen.

Where will Mike Maignan play next season?

Maignan is still in talks with AC Milan as per the report, with the player’s €2.8 million-a-year salary set to increase if he signs a new deal with the Rossoneri. The Italian side are reportedly offering him around €5 million plus bonuses per year as part of their efforts to renew his contract, as they await an answer from the 30-year-old.

As for Chelsea, they are currently placing their faith in Sanchez, who has shown massive improvements in his form and composure. It may be the case that the Spaniard might stay on as their No.1, as Chelsea will not pursue a move for Maignan anymore.
